SO, WHAT MAKES A THEATRE A BROADWAY THEATRE?

Before we take our tour, let’s clear up one of the biggest Broadway misconceptions: a Broadway theater doesn’t necessarily have to be located directly on Broadway!

To officially be considered a Broadway theater, a venue must:

• Have a seating capacity of 500 or more
• Be located in Manhattan’s Theater District, in and around Times Square
• Be recognized as a Broadway theater by The Broadway League

There are currently 41 official Broadway theaters in New York City, each with its own history, architecture, and personality.

AND, WHAT MAKES AN OFF-BROADWAY THEATRE?

Off-Broadway theaters are generally smaller venues with seating capacities between 100 and 499 seats. Unlike Broadway theaters, they can be found throughout New York City, not just in the Theater District.

Some well-known Off-Broadway theaters include Cherry Lane Theatre, SoHo Playhouse, and Minetta Lane Theatre.
