6 Songs Full Of "The Sweetest Sounds" Sung By Legendary Dia…

It would have been the legendary Tony, Grammy and Golden Globe Award winner Diahann Carroll's 85th birthday today. She had appeared on Broadway in 3 shows, The Sweetest Sounds, Agnes of God and No Strings for which she made Tony history. Diahann appeared in two movie musicals Carmen Jones and Porgy and Bess and more televisions shows than we could begin to name!

To honor her day, we look back at six marvelous Broadway covers by the iconic Diahann Carroll.

"The Music That Makes Me Dance" (Funny Girl)

This Funny Girl cover is absolutely divine. Her gorgeous voice soars at 3:43 and brings such a dreamy quality to the Jule Styne tune.

"The Sweetest Sounds" (No Strings)

Yes, this is a disco arrangement but we had to include a song from the show that she made history in! In Broadway's 1962 No Strings, Diahann was the first Black actress to win the Best Actress Tony portraying Barbara Woodruff.

"A Sleepin' Bee" (House of Flowers)

Diahann made her Broadway debut singing this tune in House of Flowers popularizing this standard to so many. The storytelling!

"With One Look" (Sunset Boulevard)

Canadian audiences were lucky to see Carroll as Norma Desmond in this lavish Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. She sounds incredible in this clip.

"Where Am I Going" (Sweet Charity)

A few years after the Broadway debut of this Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields tune in Sweet Charity sung by Gwen Verdon, Diahann put a jazzy uptempo flair to the song. Witness the effortless Broadway belt by this superstar in this clip. It's everything.

"Aquarius"/"Let The Sun Shine In" (Hair)

We don't deserve the amazing-ness of this clip. From the coat / mic swap, the medley, the lyric changes, the walking bass backing arrangement. So fun!
