Meet the Magician: The Illusionists' Yu Ho-Jin

The international hit magic spectacular The Illusionists is back on Broadway for the holiday season with an all-new show at the Neil Simon Theatre, and returning to blow audiences' minds with his award-winning card manipulation is The Manipulator, Yu Ho-Jin—also know as "the future of magic", the first Asian performer to win the Grand Prix Award at the FISM World Championships of Magic in 2012, and the youngest person to win the Magician of the Year Award from the Academy of Magical Arts at the Magic Castle in Hollywood.

BroadwayBox continues its weekly Meet the Magician series as we get to know Yu Ho-Jin.

1. The first trick or illusion I ever learned was:
When I was 8 years old, a friend of mine from school showed me a very simple card trick. A single card would appear and disappear in his hands. It was astonishing.

2. The moment I knew I wanted to pursue his professionally was:
I was instantly attracted to magic since then (my answer in Question 1). I learned and practiced magic tricks myself after that and showed it to my friends, and just the fact that they loved it thrilled me. My dream was to become a magician from day one, and I’m still trying every day to fulfill my dream to the greatest.

3. Greatest thing about being part of The Illusionists’ Band of Brothers:
Being part of it itself. I can’t describe more than how thankful I am to be part of this amazing group of people. I learn something new every day, it’s exciting and I simply can’t ask for more.

5. My favorite city in the world to perform in:
NYC, Broadway for sure. I love all cities actually, they all have different vibes but NYC is special for some reason.

6. One thing I always have with me when I travel:
My deck of cards. I have firm trust that these will save me when I’m randomly broke and lost on the streets.

7. Person who inspires me professionally:
Lee Eun-gyeol. Always have, always will. He’s my life-time mentor and inspiration with or without magic.

Be amazed by record-breaking magic superstar Yu Ho-Jin and the other fantastic Illusionists at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre through January 3, 2016.
