After featured roles in the hit musicals Spring Awakening, In the Heights and The Addams Family, Krysta Rodriguez is stepping out as a leading lady in the heartwarming musical comedy First Date. Rodriguez kicks ass as downtown bad-girl Casey, but anyone who saw her as Anna Vargas (AKA the Diva) on Smash knows kicking ass comes as second nature to this Broadway star. BroadwayBox recently caught up with Rodriguez to grill her with our five burning questions.

1. What’s your go-to first date outfit like?
My go-to first date outfit would be something casual— jeans and a nice top.

2. What’s the thing you miss most about California?
The weather and my family. I like to look at the beach more than I like to be on the beach—sand just gets everywhere and that just bothers me.

3. What was the last big thing you splurged and bought yourself?
My opening night dress for First Date. When you’re opening a show, they’ll give you clothes, but I didn’t love anything as much as I loved that dress; and they weren’t going to give that to me, so I decided to buy it. [Laughs]

4. When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?
Billy Crystal in 700 Sundays. It’s amazing. He’s the best we got, for sure.

5. What song unleashes your inner diva?
I’m going to go with “Natural Woman” by Carole King. And maybe a cheesy Katy Perry song or Beyoncé song if I need it.
