Story for Katie Roche

KATIE ROCHE is the story of a fiery young servant girl of uncertain parentage living a quiet life in rural Ireland, while harboring dreams of grandeur. Katie aspires to sainthood but has a devilish temper which may be her undoing.

Originally produced by Ireland's famous Abbey Theatre in 1936, KATIE ROCHE was hailed as a masterpiece by the Irish Independent, garnering rave reviews for both the playwright and the play:

The response was so strong that KATIE ROCHE went on to be published in an Anthology of “Famous Plays” from that year (“even though it cannot yet be called famous,” the publisher acknowledged), where it appeared beside Clifford Odets’ Awake and Sing. In his review of the Anthology, St. John Ervine (author of JOHN FERGUSON, seen at the Mint in 2006) praised “The last play in the volume is Miss Teresa Deevy’s KATIE ROCHE, and it is, I feel inclined to say, the most remarkable of them.” He went on to say of the playwright, “Miss Deevy may be a genius.”

KATIE ROCHE immediately became Teresa Deevy’s most successful play. A U.S. tour was kicked off in New York in 1937 and a London production was presented the following year. The play was revived by the Abbey in 1949, 1975 and 1994—each time to critical acclaim: “Full of wisdom and compassionate warmth,” The Irish Independent gushed in 1975, “A most welcome draught of pure, fresh air in the theater.”

This winter, Teresa Deevy's groundbreaking drama finally returns to New York with performances running from January 26th through March 24th.
