Hedda Gabler Tickets

The title character in Henrik Ibsen's classic Hedda Gabler is a beautiful, cold and destructive woman who is one of the most riveting roles ever brought to life on stage. A character tragedy, Hedda Gabler is Ibsen's most controlled and ruthless work (newly adapted by critically acclaimed playwright Jon Robin Baitz). The play, which still packs the same punch as it did when it premiered in 1891, tells the story of a woman, played by Kate Burton, who is a complex mix of wiles, stratagems, cruelty, charm, cowardice and cunning. Hedda's explosive struggle to survive forever alters the lives of those around her as the fire inside her burns to a tragic end.

Tickets at Todd Haimes Theatre

The Todd Haimes Theatre was built in 1918 by producers (and brothers) Arch and Edgar Selwyn and was originally named The Selwyn Theatre. Like many other theaters, it fell victim to the economic woes of the Great Depression and became a movie house in the 1930s.

The venue was a movie theater for almost 70 years, until it was purchased by the Roundabout Theatre Company in the late 1990s. After an expensive overhaul, it reopened as The American Airlines Theatre in 2000. In January 2024, the theater was renamed in memory of Roundabout Theatre Company's longtime artistic director and chief executive Todd Haimes.

Story for Hedda Gabler

A woman of dangerous independence restrained by a conventional marriage, Hedda Gabler indulges in a cruel game, amusing herself with the misfortune she inflicts on those around her. Cutting and deliciously deceptive, Hedda struggles to balance her wild desires against the presentable life she's chosen for herself, but instead sets into motion a manic chain of events. A new interpretation of Henrik Ibsen's modern classic, Hedda Gabler is surprising, scandalous and subversive.

Starring Tony Award winner Mary-Louise Parker ("Dedda Gabler"), Tony award winner Michael Cerveris (Jorgen Tesman), Paul Sparks (Ejlert Lovborg) and Peter Stormare (Judge Brack). The cast also includes Lois Markle (Berte), Ana Reeder (Mrs. Thea Elvsted) and Helen Carey (Miss Juliane Tesman).

Hedda Gabler will begin previews on Tuesday, January 6th, 2009 and open officially on Sunday, January 25th, 2009 at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway (227 West 42nd Street). This will be a limited engagement through March 29th, 2009.
