Story for JUÁREZ: A Documentary Mythology!

More than two years in development. Over 200 hours of interview footage. Hundreds of conversations. Theater Mitu creates an artful portrait of a community in crisis and transformation. Gangs, cartels, corruption, NAFTA, femicide, the War on Drugs, fear, familial honor, mythology and hope all appear in stories collected from parents, politicians, artists, activists, factory workers, journalists, professors and more.

Rubén Polendo is founder and artistic director of Theater Mitu; applauded as “one of the ten top, hot companies in New York” and “exciting…outside the boundaries of standard Western drama” (The New York Times). Polendo has written and directed several works with his company including: JUÁREZ: A Documentary Mythology; DR.C (or How I Learned to Act in Eight Steps); An opera in Eight Parts (developed at Sundance and Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center/premiered at 3LD Arts and Technology Center in New York); The Apostle Project (premiered at New York Theater Workshop); Canticle; Moonchiold; Ahraishak (developed at Sundance); The Legend of The Kinnaree. Adaptations include The Ramayana; A Dream Play; Waiting; Chaos; Death of a Salesman; The Mahabharata; Medea; A Play on War(an adaptation of Mother Courage, produced by NAATCO); The Odyssey; Hamletmachine; The Shakespeare Project; The Noh Cycle; The Tutor; Four Saints in Mexico; Dhammashok (developed at the Sundance Theater Lab/presented at The Mark Taper Forum’s ON STAGE series); A Midsummer Night’s Dream and String of Fragmentation (Patravadi Theater, Thailand); HAIR (Skirball Center).
