Based on the 1928 Alberto Cassella play, which appeared on Broadway in 1929, the musical's libretto is by the late Tony Award winner Peter Stone (1776) and Tony Award-winner Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray). Tony-winning composer lyricist Yeston (Nine, Titanic) wrote the songs. In Death Takes a Holiday, the Grim Reaper is a charming character who wonders what human life and loveis all about. This dark romantic musical is set in Europe.
Just after the first World War, the loneliest of souls arrives at an Italian villa disguised as a handsome young Prince, and for the first time experiences the joys and heartbreaks of life. But when he unexpectedly falls in love with a newly engaged young woman, the mysterious stranger discovers that love may in fact be stronger than death. Based on the beloved play that first appeared on Broadway in 1929, Death Takes a Holiday features an enchanting story adapted by Tony Award®-winning bookwriters Peter Stone (1776) and Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and lush, romantic songs by the Tony Award®-winning composer-lyricist Maury Yeston (Nine, Titanic). This soaring new musical about the power of love to change, inspire and sustain us is directed by Tony Award®-winner Doug Hughes (Doubt).
