Carmen is the perfect work to see because it has everything: sex, violence, comedy, interesting characters, beautiful music and a dramatic story. New York City Opera's production of Carmen is special for several reasons. First of all, it's produced the way Bizet wanted it done - with dialogue. It keeps the drama moving in a very fast way and keeps it exciting for the audience. Carmen is one of the most popular in New York City Opera's repertory. The melodies are immortal, the story is terrific, and this production is one of the truest and most dramatic. Carmen caused a scandal at its premiere. If only the young Bizet could have lived to know that his sumptuous score would become one of the world’s most popular operas. Beth Clayton, "a strong, beautiful, dangerous presence with a warm, dark, round mezzo-soprano to match" (The New York Times), portrays the seductive gypsy, joined by Scott Piper, a "bright-voiced tenor" with a "sweet sound" (The New York Times) as Don Jose.
