Story for To Whom It May Concern
After reading a newspaper article describing a marine's heroic activity on a peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, a precocious and vulnerable adolescent boy in Abilene Kansas sends the marine a box of homemade cookies with an accompanying "fan" letter and then fuels the soldier's fantasies by deciding to pretend that he is an 18 year old girl. A cyber romance develops between the two that is temporarily shattered when the marine decides to pay a visit to "the girl" of his dreams. Yet the identification they share with one another through mutual alienation, loneliness and longing continues to inspire and prolong their strange bond.
