Throughout their career, Sonic Youth have expressed a variety of influences, from Patti Smith to John Cage. Sonic Youth is considered as pivotal in the rise of alternative rock. The band is known for their use of unorthodox guitar tunings, and for altering the guitar's timber with the use of objects like screwdrivers and drumsticks.
