This sprightly new version of Goldoni’s classic farce is directed by former artistic director of the New York Shakespeare Festival, Stuart Vaughan, and performed by a dedicated group of talented New York actors. The action centers on how an out-of-work servant, Truffaldino, tries to make his way in life by hiring himself simultaneously to two employers, keeping each ignorant of his other job. He finds himself adrift in a world of disguises, broken marriage contracts, duels, and incorrectly delivered letters. Ultimately, “love conquers all,” and our inept con-man/hero succeeds. The struggle of this upwardly mobile innocent to keep afloat creates a “man-versus-society” comment as hilariously valid today as it was in 1745.
