Story for La Traviata: Opera

City Opera’s production is a salutary reminder of why this masterpiece continues to be so relevant and timeless. Is love bound by social station? Such is the question that propels La traviata to its passionate and fatal finale. Based on the story of a real-life courtesan with a heart of gold, Verdi’s most beloved work was composed at the peak of his dramatic and musical genius. The result is the perfect romantic opera.

THE PRODUCTION: Staged by renowned soprano Renata Scotto, this City Opera production is set against the glamour and decadence of 19th-century Paris. The opulent party scenes feature choruses, dancers, bullfighters, and principals all bedecked in ravishing salon-society garb. Their contrast with the simplicity of the final bedchamber is “visually stunning,” raves New York Sun.
THE MUSIC: Violetta Valéry swept Verdi off his feet, and she’ll do the same to you. Rarely has a heroine’s blossoming and fading been so precisely portrayed, in music of such poignant lyricism and dramatic realism. This most personal of Verdi’s operas, a web of elegant waltz tunes orchestrated with translucent delicacy, weaves the timeless tale of a love that survives all attempts to corrupt it.
