Marilyn the Musical: A West End Disaster!! Review by: Pakalolo, Jun 12, 2009 |
This had to be one of the worst shows I’ve ever seen! The moment it began there was laughter from the audience, however it’s NOT a comedy, it’s a tragedy through and through... The main problem with this show (and there are plenty!) is that it’s not advertised properly. It’s the story of Marilyn Monroe, but unbeknownst to me, told through intrepid dance!! God help the poor dancers in this train wreck of a 'production'. They are decent ... read more dancers but again, billed as a Musical on one of the most interesting women/icons of modern history I expected a very interesting colourful Musical. What I got was a poor sounding tape recording of some Marilyn songs with dancers flopping, jerking and moving erratically around on stage with video projections of the real Marilyn from time to time shown against them. From the moment it starts I knew it was all down hill from there. It opens with poor Marilyn’s psychopathic Mother screaming and jerking around on stage, to laughter from the audience. About five minutes into the show between the snickers, I also heard several people snoring as they slept through this disaster! To be honest I wish I had been fortunate enough to have fallen asleep myself. Instead I tried in vain to follow this vague interpretation of her life. I’m not an expert on Marilyn but I have read books on her and know the story of Marilyn, however trying to follow this storyline was like pulling teeth. There was no logic to what should have been a cake walk of a production. I mean its Marilyn Monroe!! Her story is all there. All a gifted director would need to do is follow the dots and have watched her films. Don’t get me wrong I attended art school and have seen loads of modern dace, but how this monster of a show made it to the West end is beyond me. Somehow I stuck it out to intermission and myself and at least half of the disappointed audience headed straight for the exits not to return for the second tragedy, I mean act. One fellow patron who was quickly heading for the exit turned to me and said, “Everyone is leaving, that’s not a good sign…” I couldn’t have agreed more.
