Not what I expected - so sad Review by: kcbird, Dec 22, 2009 |
| I love the original movie Xanadu and have DVD and CD. This show made me wince, bad acting and the Australian accent was horrible. Sonny was not endearing. Very few jokes made me laugh. Singing was Excellent - loved the music - that is all. I can just listen to my CD and get more pleasure than the show gave me. |

WAS AMAZING! SAD TO SEE IT GO! Review by: , Oct 2, 2008 |
FUN FUN FUN! I will admit I was leary of seeing this show, as I expected full on cheese. I LOVED IT! Music is wonderful - CHEYENNE JACKSON IS AMAZING! GREAT VOICE (and HOT!). We thankfully had the understudy for the lead female role -we all find Kerry Butler annoying, THE UNDERSTUDY ROCKED! The supporting cast is HYSTERICAL! WHY DID THIS CLOSE? SHOW WAS PACKED 2 WEEKS AGO AND EVERYONE LOVED IT! |

Fun, Fun, Fun Review by: dvl519, Sep 26, 2008 |
| This play is a feel good experience from beginning to end. The jokes, the music, its a win win play. I saw it when it first came out and would go again. No intermission, which makes this a plus in my book. Go see it. |

Xanadu - XanaDon't Review by: F. P. S., Sep 25, 2008 |
| This was a worst show in the history of shows. The script was terrible, the jokes were bad, the story was horrible - If I could sit through this, then i can sit through anything! They should call this play XanaDon't - Don't waste your time and money. |

Unpretentious fun Review by: JW, Aug 15, 2008 |
| I usually don't see a show more than once, but this show is so irresistably charming that my wife and I went back a second time (this time with an out-of-town friend), and we found it to be just as entertaining as the first go around. Yes, it's fluff, but the material is treated in such an unpretentious manner, that everyone, including the audience, feels that they're in on the joke. Extremely enjoyable. |

| I JUST SAW XANADU AND IT WAS AWESOME. I GOT TO EXPERIENCE IT WITH MY 10 YEAR OLD NIECE AND MY MOM WHO IT 70. THEY BOTH WERE JUST MESMERIZED AT THE PERFORMANCE BY THE ENTIRE CAST. I AM GLAD MY NIECE GOT TO SEE SUCH A FUN, EXCITING SHOW, AS HER FIRST BROADWAY EXPERIENCE. THIS SHOW HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE. |

Xanadu=FUN! Review by: aristocat, Aug 9, 2008 |
I spent my afternoon at the matinee performace for the very funny and entertaining hit show, Xanadu! I am so glad that I finally went to see this much talked about show. I was thrilled with the performances by Kerry Butler and Cheyenne Jackson. They are adorable together and very talented. (Kerry Butler's new CD is wonderful and Cheyenne Jackson was terrific in Damn Yankees, so I knew that I would not be disappointed.) Mary Testa and Whoopi ... read more Goldberg are hilarious and everything they say and do is funny. I smiled and laughed throughout the entire show. What a great escape from everyday life! The only negative part of the show was the length. After 90 minutes, I wanted more! I loved how the cast interacted with the audience, particularly with the lucky people who were seated on the stage. The entire cast was very entertaining and made my trip to Xanadu one that I will be talking about for a long time. The mix of comedy, music, dancing and roller skating make this a show that should not be missed! |

Re-visiting Xanadu, with Whoopi Goldberg Review by: Beth M, Aug 3, 2008 |
SUMMER CAMP: WHOOPI FOR XANADU! By Beth Mandelbaum, August 3, 08 Looking for some “out of this world” entertainment during these “dog days of summer?” Consider seeing Xanadu, or perhaps seeing it again. I loved Xanadu when I first saw it this spring, when I posted a review. And as it has been said that “love is better the second time around,” I can honestly say that, at this very moment and until early September, there ... read more is a new ingredient to this utterly delightful show that will knock you legwarmers off: Whoopi Goldberg, playing a major supporting role, the wickedly hilarious Greek Muse Calliope (the Greek Muse of Epic Poetry), usually played by the delightful Jackie Hoffman, who is on leave. Xanadu is, to me, one of the most unabashedly fun, superbly campy, and totally endearing of musicals. Running over a year, it is holds up wonderfully and joyfully, with its absolutely terrific cast: Kerry Butler, Cheyenne Jackson (whom I had the enormous pleasure of seeing just a week ago in the City Center Encores production of Damn Yankees), and Tony Roberts, a raucously excellent supporting cast, a very catchy and feel good score by the award winning Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, and a hilarious book written by Douglas Carter Beane, who wrote The Little Dog Laughed. While trying to tread carefully so as not to take over the show, Whoopi is, however, Whoopi, and her fantastic star quality shines out very brightly with the flame of comedy. It was an added joy to watch her perform and to see how much she seemed to be enjoying herself and relishing her role. Whoopi is a wonderful asset to an already extremely funny show. It is hard to find the exact words to describe her performance, because she was very much playing Whoopi, but in Greek clothing. She was totally cool if she forgot a line, and shamelessly announced this to the audience! I especially appreciated her witty ad-libbing. She was certainly a very amusing Muse (sorry--I just couldn’t resist this!). And as “luck” would have it, especially for those who have already seen Mary Testa’s absolutely hilarious performance as Melpomene, The Greek Muse of Tragedy (quite the opposite of the brilliant comedic talent required for this part!), cast member Andre Ward, who generally plays another of the Muses, Terpsichore (the Muse of Choral Song and Dance), was understudying Ms.Testa, who has been out of the show this past week. He and Whoopi were quite a pair as the two leading Muses. There was a wonderful chemistry between them. And together they added a major touch of side splitting and endearing humor and camp to this already wonderfully High Camp show. And even if you wait to see Xanadu after Whoopi leaves the show, in my opinion, you can’t go wrong.

Overrated, Not Worth the Money Review by: Vato, Jul 27, 2008 |
| I expected more from this show after having read others' reviews. I'll start with the things I liked. I mostly enjoyed Kerry Butler's singing and roller-skating, however, her attempt at an Australian accent is wretched. I also liked the music, however, that was a given since I had gotten the album for it back in 1980. I also enjoyed the explanation of the various Greek gods in mythology and found it interesting. Now the bad--the storyline ... read more in threadbare and very poorly written. The show is meant to be a parody of the old movie, but I laughed mildly only a couple times. The writer of the show betrays a very juvenile sense of humor. The guy who played Sonny was mediocre. Mostly, I just found it annoying and overrated. I can't recommend that you waste your money on it. |
