Laughter, Stardust, a Great Evening - We Plan to Go Again Review by: BroadwayBabySawIt, Nov 30, 2009 |
| We really enjoyed this one-woman show. Carrie Fisher was amazing - she engaged the audience from start to finish. If you literally want to be sprinkled with stardust, make sure to sit in the first 2 rows of the theater, you won't regret it! Ms Fisher has an amazing story to tell, and tells it really well. We laughed and laughed, but also came away from the show with much to think about, including the effects of celebrity on a person's life,... read more, and also Ms Fisher's amazingly open discussions of living with mental illness. We saw Ms Fisher on the Charlie Rose show, where she gave a great interview, and seeing her in person is so much funnier. She personalizes the show, adding new material as events occur in her life. Highly recommended to all adult audiences, particularly movie fans. We are planning to go again, it's that great! |

Funny show, insight into a hollywood family Review by: dietgrl, Oct 24, 2009 |
| I wasn't too interested in seeing this, but I was pleasantly surprised. Carrie was funny and able to sustain the audience interest just by telling stories. She talks candidly about her substance abuse, mental illness and wacky relationships. I think she focuses a lot on Star Wars because she is forever identified with those series of movies no matter how old she gets. She even sings and has a good voice! She should have added more singing ... read more in and made this show a real musical. |

Interesting but much too long. Review by: Sue, Oct 22, 2009 |
Carrie Fisher is an interesting person and very intelligent but two hours of her life is far too long. This would have been better told in a shorter time period. There was much too much of her role in Star Wars. The time spent discussing her very extended Hollywood family was indeed interesting. Carrie Fisher is very bright and has a good sense of humor, but not enough for two hours of her life. She attracts a gay following and I think ... read more that is why the NY Times gave the show such a good review. It is the only reason I can think of! |

O.K. Show Review by: Clarice, Oct 18, 2009 |
| We thought the show was o.k., not great. I think an older audience that grew up with Carrie's parents might enjoy this more. Being younger, I thought most of her comments deserved a polite chuckle, but not a laugh. The show came across as a cry for attention. It was o.k., but there are better shows to see on Broadway. |

Survivor Review by: Beth M., Oct 8, 2009 |
WISHFUL THINKING, CREATED AND STARRING CARRIE FISHER I feel as though I just took an intergalactic journey through 50 years of tragedy in a play so filled with humanity, candor, raw honesty, irony, self reflection, and lots of genuine and clever humor, that I laughed my way through Wishful Drinking, created and performed by the wonderful Carrie Fisher. And I was far from alone in my laughter. Ms. Fisher’s approach to story-telling, her ... read more personal stories, is so effectively comedic and filled with sparkling narrative that one almost feels that she is not talking about sad and serious events in her life, but rather is offering a life review that seems like a glittering party! I have never considered myself to be a fan of Carrie Fisher, as I never got into Stars Wars in the way that so many of my contemporaries did, though I certainly remember lots of the Star Wars memorabilia in the late 1970’s and following. I do remember seeing the film Postcards From the Edge, but didn’t remember that this was about Carrie Fisher and her mother. However, after spending the afternoon with this amazing talent, I am now a fan. She is truly a remarkable stage personality. I am in awe of the way Ms. Fisher works with her audience, often breaking the “4th wall,” making her play a truly lively interactive piece of theater. And she does this in hilarious ways. But I won’t spoil the fun in case you decide to go. Wishful Drinking begins, quite ironically, with Ms. Fisher, comfortable in silk pajamas and a floral nightgown, covered with hair and body glitters, dancing around her living room singing, I believe, “Happy Days are Here Again,” while on a large backdrop are projected newspapers, with one headline after another, about the scandals and unhappy situations of her life. We see this litany of difficulties, any two of which would seem be enough to bring anyone down, spinning by us, tabloid after tabloid, beginning with her father, the famous singer Eddie Fisher, leaving mom, Debbie Reynolds, to marry Elizabeth Taylor, and ending with the death of one of her closest friends, next to her in her bed. While the first scandal took place when Ms. Fisher was about 2 years old, the latter took place within the past several years, and seems visibly the most raw for her. In fact, sitting in the 4th row orchestra center, I believe that I saw her wipe away a tear that fell through her protective glitter. In fact, I truly marvel at the way Ms. Fisher is able to wend her way, for nearly two hours, with so much humor, self possession, and amazing delivery, and, to me, seemingly rather detached from the depth of feeling that one might expect, given the range and intensity of the tragedies that befell her, including her on again off again marriage to Paul Simon, of Simon and Garfunkel fame, nose-diving into drug and alcohol abuse, and a diagnosis and a life bearing the highs and lows of a mental illness, and resulting institutionalizations. Possibly an answer lies in the fact that she has been performing Wishful Drinking since 2006, at a number of venues on the east and west coasts and has learned to distance herself from the actual events while performing. Or perhaps her years of writing about the suffering that befell her, developing this play out of the material, and then having the opportunity to share it with hundreds and hundreds of people, have been be a giga-catharsis of such great magnitude that it makes everything less painful to talk about. Also, Ms Fisher is clearly audience-savvy and is not performing Wishful Drinking to manipulate audiences into pity, but rather wants her audience to continually laugh with her. Wishful Thinking makes for a very satisfying afternoon or evening.
