I don't really have much to say that has already been said - but I just wanted to say that I read the book before watching the show.
The show obviously had to take out certain things from the book. The whole thing at the beginning of the novel with the Time Dragon wouldn't be Broadway- or child-friendly enough, and it would probably end up being a lot more boring for the audience. The point, sadly, of Broadway shows nowadays is to keep ... read more audiences engaged for the entire time. Jaded teenagers (like myself, alas) need that romantic triangle of Elphaba-Fiyero-Glinda which wasn't so heavily accented in the book.
Anyway, the point is, you probably shouldn't go to "Wicked" with the impression that it's going to be exactly like the novel. If it kept all the mature themes of the book, it wouldn't sell on B'way, and that's what it's meant to do. Sad, but it's true. If you go to "Wicked", try to rid yourself of any preconceived notions of what it will be like, and experience it for what it is: a fantastic Broadway show, with great acting, great music, great choreo, great set pieces and great costumes. I promise you that if you go and let yourself have a good time without being concerned about the book, you'll really enjoy this play. :)

| This was the most underwhelming, hyped production I have ever seen. The music was average and unmemorable. The storyline was convuluted and slow developing. Seriously. I don't see why people see this as such a great Musical. I just saw it with my family and, given all the hype, had really high expectations. I came in and was wowed by the set, but when it started...I felt a little torn.
I read the book, so I think that's why I'm not so happy about this. They took out a lot. A lot. And messed up a lot of it too. Little things here and there made me more and more furious. Until, I almost walked out ... read more during intermission. But I decided to stay, just to see if they pull themselves together.
The second act was by far better than the first act. In every which way. This is not a happy story at all, so when the laughing stopped, it really got better. And we paid for good seats. Waste of money, it was. If you want to see this, don't get amazing seats. This isn't the musical to do that.
The singing was second rate too for most of the actors/actresses. Fiyero was certainly a mess. So was Elphaba(in some songs).
The audience isn't getting the full story, which really makes me mad. This was a good story, but it was screwed up as a musical.

| Saw Wicked for the 7th time with party of 8 on Sunday July 4th Matinee.......wait for it.....AWESOME!!!! OUTSTANDING!!!!! So far, the best production I've seen. Entire cast was stellar, orchestra and music phenomenal ! Great audience too! Really into it! If you have the opportunity to take someone to a Broadway musical who's never been, this is the one!! |

| My 11-year old daughter and I went to see Wicked and also got tickets to attend the "Behind the Emerald Curtain" tour (held each Saturday morning from 10-11:30am). The show itself was obviously GREAT but we were really impressed with what we learned at the tour given by Sean McCourt and Anthony Galde (members of the Wicked cast and Broadway veterans). Anyone in town on Saturday should buy the $30 ticket to attend this. Believe the hype. Wicked is an amazing show telling the story of how the Wicked Witch of the West became so, "Wicked."
Many people ask the question of whether or not it's necassary to have seen the original Wizard of Oz film to understand the plot of this musical, and the answer is no. You will notice certain things from the film, but this is a completely original musical.
The music is incredible in this musical. The effects are ... read more unreal. The characters and story are all very lovable, and the plot is great as well. This isn't an overrated show at all, it's one of those things that you have to see in your lifetime. Go see it now. |

| I just don't get it! I have seen Wicked 6 times in the past three years and it continues to WOW me everytime. How anyone can not enjoy this show is beyond comprehension. Stephen Scwartz is a musical genius and hit lightning in a bottle with Wicked. Music, story, sets, production are all outstanding....not too mention all the life lessons thrown in along the way on your journey to OZ. | Went to this on 2/17/10 and the show blew me away. I have seen over 20 different broadway shows over the last few years and this is top 3 for me. The writing and music is amazing. Defying Gravity will blow you away. Very powerful scene and song. Its great for all ages! |
