The play is about four unhappy, unlikeable people who only get more miserable as the show goes on. There's no reason to root for anyone nor any reason to care about anyone. If the characters had any redeeming qualities what happens to them during the play might draw an emotional response from the audience.
I think we all know people who just can't be happy no matter what. But paying good money to watch them for 90 minutes is not my idea ... read more of an enjoyable evening -- or good theater.
