VERY Disappointing!! Review by: laxmom, Jun 3, 2011 |
| As a family of frequent theatergoers,we were sorely disappointed by the Broadway's production of War Horse. While the technical aspects of the play were stunning--the horses, the video production and the animals, the human components and the storyline left much to be desired. Luckily, the storyline picked up after the Intermission or we would all have surely fallen asleep. Very long and definitely not close to being "the talk of Broadway." Save ... read more your money, read the book (great) and see a clip of the horses on YouTube. |

Amazing Theater Review by: mini50, Jun 2, 2011 |
War Horse was such a beautiful story based quite factually around the history of WWI. The story is quite moving, and the pupperty outstanding. The relationship between the boy and horse brought tears to my eyes on numerous occasions. The show really had an emotional effect on me for a long time after...Just great theater in all regards! Bring Tissues!! |

I was stunned!!!! Review by: Greg, May 24, 2011 |
Saw the show on April 3rd. Had watched the clips from the London show. Was looking forward to this production. I was NOT dissappointed. I was moved in my inner core. My soul was stirred. I was enchanted by the puppetry. (Don't think Lion King puppets...so much better!) I was stunned by the lighting, fog, visuals. The singing was delightful. While I love the Songman from the London production, and play the CD often, I loved the ... read more character and story telling ability of the woman in this show. Yes, you can see, I loved it. One of the most beautiful pieces of artistic theater that I've ever experienced. gc |

A Theatrical Masterpiece! Review by: ej, Apr 21, 2011 |
In years to come, references will be made to War Horse as one of Broadway's most outstanding productions. The acting is superb. The actors are par excellence; not overly dramatic, but truly realistic: I felt as though I was really there, on the battlefields of the Great World War. This is Broadway caliber. This is a story well-told. I entered the hearts and minds of the characters, even the horses, and I became them. My son, 21 years old,... read more, who saw the show with me, wants to see it again with the rest of my family. You will be in awe of the Handspring Puppets! The movements, the sounds, and the emotions are as authentic as life itself. Beautiful! |

Review by: Laura, Apr 21, 2011 |
Stunning! This is the kind of combined artistry that makes theatre the unique and vital force that it is. Every single element contributes to making a whole, transporting piece. The inspiration, the vision, the story, the design, the music and the performances all work together in heartbreaking beauty. It is a moving, magical piece of theatre art in which complex layers combine for an almost pure simplicity of story-telling. It is one of ... read more my top four theater experiences in 40 years as a frequent audience member. I saw it in London last year and loved it. Convinced 5 friends to go to NYC (from Baltimore)to see it yesterday - and everyone of them (3 of them with theatre degrees) was blown away. Yes, it is possible to find flaws in individual performances, but not in the performers' focused commitment or in their ensemble, and it is possible to quibble about ways in which the London production might be better, but that is irrelevant unless you are faced with a "NY or London" choice - in which case I envy you anyway. |

Can't be replicated elsewhere Review by: theatrelover, Apr 16, 2011 |
| I saw a preview performance and was overwhelmed by the artistry. It was an enchanting, moving evening of theatre--something that can't be replicated in a road show--something that one must go to NY (or London) to see. I am not even a horse-lover, but I fell in love with the horses!!! Go buy tickets at once, but please don't take children younger than 10 or sensitive children. |

A Terrific Show for the Entire Family Review by: aseatontheaisle, Apr 15, 2011 |
The “human” actors in War Horse perform wonderfully but they all must take back seats to the true stars of this spectacular multi-media production, Joey and Topthorn, two larger than life equine puppets (and their creators and the several different puppeteers who manipulate them on stage). For it is Joey and Topthorn who dominate this play from beginning to end - and who are the primary reason that you should make every effort to bring ... read more your whole family to see this play. The story itself is exciting, adventurous and likely to be enjoyed by children and adults alike. But it is also much more than that. It is a story of honor and deceit, of man’s humanity and inhumanity to his fellow man, of children and adults, of mothers, fathers and sons, of envy and petty rivalries, of bravery and cowardice, of the horror and futility of war – in sum, of everything that makes man what he is, for better or for worse. And what makes the play so remarkably expressive is that much of this is depicted through the incredible movements of those larger-than-life equine puppets on stage. |

Rather a Disappointment Review by: Cliff, Apr 14, 2011 |
This was rather a disappointment, considering the raves the London production got. While the puppets (and puppeteers) were terrific, the actors were, for the most part, not. I was sorry I didn't have a chance to see the London production. Most of the actors appear to be students at NYU, and it shows. |

Review by: machomann, Apr 14, 2011 |
| I saw the final preview performance & I must admit that I was disappointed in the show. It leaves too much to one's imagination. The horses are great but the actor playing Albert is terrible in the role. The play does bring out the horrors of war but to me the book - which moved me to tears - is much better than this production. |

NYC show does not live up to London counterpart Review by: nynylondon, Mar 26, 2011 |
| The London show which I've also seen is 5 stars, bar none. But this review is of the NYC production which is not the same show at all. Instead of authentic British accents and the spellbinding voice of the songman, we instead get sometimes unconvincing accents and a broadway-esque sounding songman with none of the character to his voice as the original. There was far less focus on the horses and my favorite, the goose, memorable scenes which ... read more were so powerful in the London original to bring me to tears were clipped and emotionless. Why on earth did they replace the wonderful scenes which were completely in german and french with 100% english, albeit in a laughable Hogan Hero's type accent. It seemed like so much emphasis was placed on the literal story that the somewhere along the way the magic was lost. That said, the puppetry was still amazing and worth seeing, and certain actors were just as good as the original-- the boy Albert, his father and mother and the captain were favs. |

Amazing... Moving.... Loved it!!!! Review by: CrisNJ, Mar 17, 2011 |
| Saw preview 3/17/11. It was flawless. I loved this play. The horses were amazing and the acting was superb. It was a packed house with applause and standing ovation at the end. It was moving story. I loved the creativity of this play. A must see! If you can, try to get Left orchestra seats. We had aisle seats and the horse actually comes up the aisle during once scene. It was amazing to see it upclose. |

Theatre at its Best Review by: CANADA GOOSE, Mar 16, 2011 |
Saw the premiere last night. Absolutely amazing night at the theatre. The puppet-sculptures are incredible and the puppet-performers put in an amazing athletic and acting feat. There was a standing ovation at the end. Pretty grim theme, but worth it.
