Refresing, Creative Show with catchy score Review by: theatermom, Aug 23, 2008 |
| We saw this show last Sunday afternoon and loved it. Bought the score, can't stop playing the CD. It's so simple and real that it is a hoot! I loved the reference to RENT and caught it right away. Hope you have a great run! It's nice to see people's dreams come true in front of your eyes. |

It's still writing itself Review by: joeshmoe, Aug 2, 2008 |
This show was awesome- the audience was laughing from start to finish. It's about the ridiculous (and sometimes painful) history of the show itself. It comes off as unpolished, edgy, and relentlessly honest- it's difficult to believe that this made it to broadway. I felt like I was hanging out in the performer's living room listening to them goof around, not at a show. This is probably not a great show for most tourists, and it's certainly ... read more not for kids, but it's very very good.

A One-Trick Pony, but it's a Pretty Good Trick Review by: DoctorJoeE, Jul 26, 2008 |
| Four actors, four chairs, a guy playing a keyboard -- and a script about writing a script. That's what we have here, in a nutshell. Since everything on Broadway these days is either a revival or a movie ripoff, it's nice to see something fresh and original. That said, the plot basically goes nowhere, and doesn't impart anything particularly profound -- although there is some profundity in "Die, Vampires, Die" which anyone chasing his or her ... read more dreams would do very well to remember. And when the writer sings, "I'd rather write 9 people's favorite thing than 100 people's 9th-favorite thing", you believe him. There are a lot of obscure references to stage actors and long-forgotten shows that will only be appreciated by critics and show-biz geeks. But the show is funny, and entertaining. And fast (90 minutes, no intermission). And profane. (This is NOT a show for kids.) In short, it's a one-trick pony that does it's trick rather well. But will it play successfully to tourists, and in venues outside New York City? I doubt it. |

Do yourself a favor. GO SEE THIS SHOW RIGHT NOW. Review by: Lindsey, Jul 24, 2008 |
| This show is one of the (if not the) best things playing on Broadway right now. It is incredibly funny, touching, and inspiring. Yes, there are a lot of theatre "inside jokes" but they're such a small part of the show as a whole, and if you don't get every little thing, it absolutely doesn't affect your enjoyment of the show. Seriously, GO SEE IT NOW. You won't be sorry. The entire cast is fabulous, and it was the best time I've had ... read more at the theatre in a long time. |

Clever but some of the jokes are flat. Review by: Annie, Jul 21, 2008 |
| The concept of the show was clever (a show about the nuances of writing and struggling to produce a show). Not being an "insider" I knew I would not get many of the jokes, but of the ones I did get- many were sophomoric. I attended this play a few days after opening at the Lyceum, and the audience certainly seemed to enjoy it much more that I did. |

A Gem of a Musical Review by: Allie, Jul 17, 2008 |
| This show is a gem. I went with a friend who isn't B'way savvy and he said it was one of the best shows he's seen. Going in I thought the show might be a little too indulgent being a show about the show you're watching and its evolution through its various productions. But the book was very clever and funny, the songs were wonderful, and the entire cast, who are the creators of the show, was terrific. A wonderful night in the theater for all,... read more, but especially is you're a fan of musical theater. |

Wonderfully witty show with an immensely charming and talented cast Review by: broadwaygeek, Jul 15, 2008 |
I really adored this sweet little show. It was terrifically funny and just wonderfully endearing. The entire cast was excellent, particularly the golden-voiced Heidi Blickenstaff and the hilarious Susan Blackwell. Co-star Hunter Bell's script is very well-written and has many laugh out loud moments. Jeff Bowen's simply catchy score was also very enjoyable as well, with the numbers "Die, Vampire, Die" and "A Way Back to Then" being particular ... read more favorites. True, not everyone will get all the "insider" jokes, and this is certainly not a show for those who want big, flashy sets (though the simple set design works perfectly). The charm and humor of this show transcends that, however. It is definitely a worthwhile show to see.

Bad show, don't see it. Review by: the man, Jul 13, 2008 |

a wonderful show Review by: coolboi952, Jul 11, 2008 |
| I saw this show on Sunday night and I must say that it was a really big surpise. I never listened to the cast recording and I must say that after the show I bought it and it has been on my iPod ever scince. I must say that u should go why u can get the great discount. It was well worth it for 47.50. This is a completly orginal show it was nice to be able to watch a musical that was not a specticale. However if u crave a big b way show with a ... read more huge orchestra then this is not the show to see. I will say that my friend who is not as bway savvy still got most of the jokes and truly enjoyed it. I wish this show a very long run because they deserve it. |

Review by: kjmslp, Jul 9, 2008 |
| I agree with a previous reviewer that some of the jokes get lost on people who aren't New York/theater savvy. They do, however, make a joke of that in the show which made it not as self-indulgent as I had originally thought. With that said, I really enjoyed the show. The actors are very talented, a lot of laughs, and entertaining music. I would recommend seeing it with discount tickets. |

A One Joke Show Review by: , Jul 8, 2008 |
| When this show is funny, it is very funny. Sadly, this is only about 20% of the overly long 90 minute run time. The 4 actors are very good, very talented, but the premise doesn't support a show of this length. It's pretty much a one joke schlep through an hour and a half, and that joke is very specific to living in New York and working in theatre. While the show can appeal to people who don't fit this profile, not all the "in jokes" will land.... read more. I don't want to be the one to rain on a struggling artist's parade, but I'm not sure I would recommend this show. |
