Time Stands Still in pictures only, Life is a Drama to Live Review by: Diract 66, Jan 21, 2011 |
| The themes running through this show are many. Most of all it is, Love! Love of your profession, Love of another person, Love of family, Love of the truth, Love of idea, and Love of Life. This beautifully acted play, by everyone, especially Laura Linney, is not to be missed, as drama is so scarce on Broadway right now. Everyone in this play is trying to find some sort of happiness and by the end they all find this happiness in quite different ... read more ways. The setting is a loft apartment and quite spaciously used on stage. Both Christina Ricci and Eric Bogosian have small supporting parts and not much stage time, however they add to the humor of the this very serious play. Ricci has the best line in the play about living life as she exits the front door. Brian d'Arcy James plays his character very low key and actually, I feel, needs to project more. Linney has the biggest physical transformation because of the car bomb explosion she has been in as a photographer. Yet, her emotional character is the only one to remain constant by the end of the play. This play ends exactly as I would have ended it, in a freeze frame! You can probably have some good conversations about this play afterward over coffee. |

will linger in your brian Review by: broadway girl, Nov 15, 2010 |
| Ms. Linney and Ms. Ricci gave impeccable performances. Ms. Ricci brought sensitivity and heart to her character, and Ms. Linney brought a sharp edge hiding her vulnerability. Though the script held my interest constantly, it did not deliver a knock out punch. For anyone who is passionate about their work, this show will slowly linger in the quagmires of your brain. |

Time Stands Still is Stunning Review by: Brenda, Oct 25, 2010 |
At the very heart of Time Stands Still is the tension between two primary human relationships; that which we have with the world and that which we have with our primary partner. The thought, and emotion provoking play by Donald Marguiles (Brooklyn Boy, Dinner with Friends) is directed by Daniel Sullivan (Proof, The Homecoming) and playing at the lovely Cort Theatre. This four character Manhattan Theatre Club production moved to Broadway with ... read more only one change in cast, Christina Ricci for Alicia Silverstone. The play, set entirely in a decidedly not posh Williamsburg Brooklyn loft, is the story of two couples. It is a tight, lovely, moving and solid play that can only be called a(cringe inducing) "grown-up" play. Perhaps I am attaching this moniker after seeing several productions focused on the angst of twenty somethings? More likely it is due to the very adult subject matter. How does one reconcile one's place in the world with one's sense of self? The primary couple, James (Brian d'Arcy James) and Sarah (Laura Linney) have just returned from Iraq, she with intense physical scars, and he with equally intense psychological scars. James is a freelance journalist and Sarah and acclaimed photographer employed by an acclaimed magazine. The other couple in the mix is Sarah's editor (and former torch carrying paramour) Richard (Eric Bogosian) and his new very young girlfriend Mandy (Christina Ricci.) The central story is how James and Sarah will now move forward. The layers of these four characters are fascinating and are teased out with fine directing nuance. If I had any complaint it was that Brian d'Arcy James seemed to be a bit restrained in his performance. I was left wondering if Mr. Sullivan intentionally designed the production in this manner so as to allow for Ms. Linney more of a spotlight, or if in fact he was being very faithful to the script. All four characters go through palpable metamorphoses. It is a testament to the actors that I wanted to pummel their characters with questions to tease out more about their motivations. How much of Sarah's life choices are predicated on her trust fund? Would she be so quick to do the work she does if she wasn't supported by someone for which she has utter disdain? And what of James' spiral into his new world of fear (which is demonstrated just a bit heavy handedly by the former war reporter now wearing a bicycle helmet.) Is James' fear now as much as a fulcrum as Sarah's money is for her? Richard and Mandy deserve a spin-off play of their own, so too are their lives mesmerizing. We watch their relationship evolve into a solid celebration of positivity while the mature relationship (they've been together 8 1/2 years) of Sarah and James can not survive in the lightness. To my delight, Marguiles presents the dark side as an affect of immaturity. There is a lovely moment when Mandy explains how utterly childish it is to wrap oneself in angst and despair. The performances of all four of these actors are simply magnificent. Ms Ricci plays younger quite convincingly and has a graceful and solid stage presence. Mr. Bogosian seems at home both on the stage and in the Brooklyn loft. Mr. James and Ms. Linney are beautiful together and apart. This is an incredibly thought provoking play, that also includes some laughs (on of them quite cheap, but I'm in a forgiving mood.) I am not sure if it will speak to every age group, but if you can see 30 ahead or can remember 55, this play will resonate deeply. The final scene is quietly powerful and quite beautiful, causing a large lump in my throat. |

Timely and moving. Well worth seeing. Review by: Like 2 Go 2 Show, Jan 29, 2010 |
This play was excellent and quite timely. It touches on the subject as to whether or not capturing photographs (any forms of media) of tragic events is appropriate or insensitive. It also delves into relationships that most of us have encountered at one time or another. The acting was superb. I got so entrenched in the characters that I was actually in tears at the end. I generally only like musicals but this play really kept my attention.... read more. Too bad this is a limited engagement. Go see it before it ends. |

Not Broadway Material Review by: brooklyn lady, Jan 24, 2010 |
We saw this show on Friday, January 22. It is well acted but I did not find the story interesting. A woman (Sarah) photographer's job covering the war torn world is her whole life. It is who she is and she will not give it up for the man(Richard) who loves her. He had been her love partner for 8 years and also her work partner. He can no longer take the violence and fear that the job involves. They have a middle ... read more aged friend(James) who visits with his new love(Mandy) who is much younger and also expecting a child. Sarah considers Mandy a lightweight and also too young. But Mandy represents life and happiness and joy to James and he is ready to embrace a new life with her. Richard also wants a new life with Sarah - a home, children, happiness but Mandy can't embrace the change. The play is a slice of their lives but I did not get involved with them. When I see a play I like to forget where I am and fall into a play and feel for the characters. I would not recommend this play. The acting was fine but the play was not. |

Superb cast higlights enjoyable new play Review by: FrisbieCat, Jan 18, 2010 |
| My wife and I both really enjoyed this show. First of all, the cast is superb. It's like watching a well-oiled machine, with Laura Linney a great pleasure to watch as always, d'Arcy James proving he is much more than just Shrek, and Bogosian and Silverstone playing a slightly odd couple in a completely convincing and compelling fashion. The plot was interesting, ranging across a series of challenging topics like the role of photographers ... read more and artist generally in a violent society, love and fidelity, and growing older. Overall, we thought this was a very engaging and enjoyable production. |
