My wife and I sae the show on 4/2 and were very disappointed. I agree with all of the negative comments I saw from other folks who attended. Julia Roberts just does not have broadway appeal. The rest of the cast were not much better. The story should have been told in half the time and in a more interesting way within each act.
This is the worst production I have seen since Orson's Shadow.
Does not come close to Doubt, Pillowman ... read more or Glengary... |

| I read with interest the person's review of April 2nd as I was at the same performance (I believe there is only a matinee on Saturdays). I thought the story was awful. As print material it might have been find but it did not translate well to the stage. Julia Roberts was good (maybe very good) but has the smallest part. The two male actors were also good but nothing can rescue this story. It was extremely boring in it's effort to be avant ... read more garde. Everyone where I was sitting was extremely disappoint. Some would not even stand when some of the theater gave a small hearted standing ovation. As one woman behind us said "It's amazing something can make even Julia Roberts boring". Don't waste your time or money. |

| When I read the early reviews here I was tempted to "ebay" my 2 tickets. Glad I didn't. Not a great play, but I've seen a lot worse. I found the plot interesting and the second act brought answers to all the questions that you will have undoubtedly figured out. I agree with the other reviewers about Julia's voice in the first act. Actually missed a few words from row F in the Mezz. Bottom line, if you already have tickets keep em. If you ... read more don't? Spend your money on tickets to Doubt. However, I saw that with the original cast. |

Julia Roberts.... The play gets attention for its headlining actress, not its substance. As Julia walks onto the stage, the audience wildly applaudes and seems more enamored with her mere presence than her theatrical acting ability. Although friends of mine had seen the play, they wouldn't tell me what they thought about it until after we had gotten to see it. Over dinner the next day, we all came to the same conclusions: lousy dialogue and ... read more lousy acting from Julia Roberts. My friends and I even realized that we had people around us leave during intermission who couldn't stand the second part of the disappointing play.
On the upside, the acting from Bradley Cooper was believable while almost saving the show. If you get free or discounted tickets to see the show, GO! If you are thinking of paying full price or God forbid premium prices to see the show, reconsider. |

The more I thought about the story, the better I liked it. It's definitely more arty than a lot of stuff on Broadway - the "Indie Film" to Wicked's "Blockbuster".
The criticism of Julia Roberts is valid. She was not loud enough, and in her opening monologue, she did the tell-tale weight shift, which I don't think was part of her character. She seemed nervous. She was MUCH better in the second act.
I disagree with some ... read more of the crticism of Paul Rudd. His role seemed to me the most challenging, as he had to play two very different characters (whereas Cooper played basically the same character in both acts - and did it well).
Once the show officially opens, I'll be another one who's very interested in what the real critics say. I suspect it will be a commercial bust, but I'm glad I went. |

| Julia Roberts is terrific in this production - I saw her April 2nd performance and she is a natural. I loved the play. It's one of Greenburg's best. It's great writing. Paul Rudd and Bradley Cooper are terrific. All are very natural. Audience loved it. Subtle, funny, moving. |

| I've seen most of the Broadway shows that have been playing in the past couple of years. I must say that by far this is the worst I've seen. Julia Roberts' acting is abysmal. The other 2 actors are a lot better but don't make up for a horrible script. The show is borring and dragged out. Don't waste money on it. |

[MINOR SPOILERS]
Jon below pegged it exactly right. I saw the matinee on March 29.
The script was surprisingly weak. The two acts are connected through a muddled and uninteresting "mystery" about what the characters' parents were up to.
Julia Roberts was too quiet and had zero appeal in the first act. She was better in the second act as a fiery southern belle type.
The two male leads did a fine job and it was ... read more neat to see the distinction between the types of characters they played in the first and second acts.
I saw Doubt the same day and that play towers over this one in every way: script, acting, characterization... |

| Neither Mr. Ruud nor Ms. Roberts possess the acting chops to project to the last row. Mr. Ruud seemed unsure of his lines and there seemed to be no brother / sister connection between the characters. Thiers were High School play quality at best. The bright star in the show is Mr. Bradley Cooper. He was perfect and he knew how to grab the audience and slam them down in their seats. It is unfortunate for him that he is saddled with two ... read more mediocre performenaces to play against. I am making sure I tell all of my friends not to bother seeing this one unless you are a fan of Mr. Cooper's work. The play was well written and had a beautiful intrinsic rhythm that Paul and Julia just couldn't seem to connect with. Maybe they will improve with time....but they aren't there yet. |

I'm sorry to say that Ms. Roberts should return to film....immediately. The play was very draggy and only got moving in the second act and then it ended abruptly. I would not recommend this show to anyone. |

| Julia was a major disappointment. She was too stiff in the first act, I almost fell asleep! I guess she was meant for movies, not Broadway. The only funny part was when they dropped a fake tomato and it bounced away on stage. The story was also quite boring and didn't tie together at all;just a series of stupid conversations that went nowhere. Don't waste your time. |

| The story was amazing- amazingly disjointed and weak. The play is in two almost unrelated acts that never get tied together. Julia Roberts was stiff and uneasy she also spoke to softly to be heard in the first act. The best part of them show was when Paul Rudd accidently dropped a plastic tomato prop on the floor and Ms. Roberts broke character and laughed uncontrollably. This was an awful production with a worse script save your money. |
