Superb Psychological Mystery Review by: Ms. X, Apr 18, 2006 |
| It appears either I was in a different theater than the others who have reviewed this play or unfortunately the play is meant for people with higher I.Q.'s. Nobody writing here seems to have the least idea what this show is about, and I suppose if you don't figure it out, the script would appear quite boring. For those intelligent theatergoers who use their minds when interpreting things, this is one of the great psychological myteries to appear ... read more on Broadway in a very long time. In that sense, it's all about the script, which I give an A although you sure have to work hard not to miss anything said in the first act or you will have no hope of figuring it out, and the script is superb. Again, it's more enjoyable to people who have read some literature, and have not limited their exposure to American Idol type entertainment. The acting by the two males is superb. Julia Roberts is in two parts which do not lend themselves to great acting. That said, she was still somewhat poor in the first act, but the intricacies of the plot, which most appeared to have missed, somewhat dictate a restrained performance. Her accent in the second act may not be perfect, but what does that have to do with anything? I suppose for people too limited to solve a puzzle, focus on insignificant details like an accent serve to occupy their time. If you are intelligent and like psychological mysteries, rush to see this play which you may want to see more than once. If you're a dummy, stay home because the play will bore you to death. |

Worth my time! Review by: Out-Of-Towner, Apr 17, 2006 |
I just got back from New York. I went there to specifically see Julia. Okay, I admit, I am a huge Julia fan, so it is hard for me to say anything bad about her. I will say that overall, I thought the play was pretty good - not the best I have seen, but worth the money and time. I might not be a "theatre pro", but I was entertained. I do agree that it is probably not Julia's greatest performance, but the acting can only be as good as the ... read more script. She really did not have a part that shows a lot of her talent. For her first attempt, however, she did great! Many critics are right - Bradley and Paul did steal the show, but they had more to work with. IN ONE LAST COMMENT - it furiates me when I hear such hateful things about Julia and needing to stick with movies, she was horrible, go home blah blah blah...the theatre district should be so happy that she is stepping out of her comfort zone and attempting this! LOOK AT ALL THE REVENUE AND PUBLICITY BROADWAY IS GETTING! Please give her props for that and quit acting SO snobby! |

A- Review by: richierich, Apr 14, 2006 |
| Overall, a very good show. Fine acting by all three actors. To those who say that Roberts doesn't pull her weight...I respectfully disagree. Not only does Roberts command the stage, she brings her otherwise lifeless character in the first act a breath of fresh air. Her accent does not, I repeat, does not sway in and out in the second act. Cooper and Rudd are just as good. Finally, the story. The plot ... read more is extremely complex and basically a character study of the three on stage. To many, Three Days of Rain may superficially appear to have a basic plot but it takes much more than two hours to fully understand the playwright's intentions. I give this play 2 big thumbs up and would recommend it to any intelligent adult. |

Acting disjointed & direction lacking Review by: smirg, Apr 12, 2006 |
I saw the April 6 show with my spouse and another couple. Overall, I was disappointed. The whole thing seemed disjointed. JRs character had nothing to "do" the entire first act which made it difficult to connect with her in any way. She didn't seem connect with PRs character. Her responses seemed canned.
There was more life in the second act, but things alluded to about JRs character in the first act did not manifest in the second. ... read more BC was entertaining. In fact, BC and PR carried the show in my opinion.
It's difficult to pull off a dialogue-driven script. I think the director made some poor choices and it showed. The actors had to work with what they were given which didn't seem like very much. |

Review by: Big JR Fan, Apr 9, 2006 |
Very disappointing script! Probably the worse ever on Broadway. If not for two brilliant male performances and a diving presense of Julia Roberts (who's BTW not playing a leading character and that's not helping the boring story) the show would be a total waste of money and would be doomed by critics and like.
Bottom line resume is: - if you are indifferent to seeing the three movie celebreties LIVE this is a NO-GO. - ... read more if you are a fan of JR or other two young talented actors who are quite popular and loved this is a good opportunity to see them act live. You'll find all three of them terrific!!! But don't expect a very intellectual story - your next door neighbor might easily "surprize" you with a more intricate story any day. |

| I enjoyed the show very much. I saw it on April 8th and was hesitant, having read the negative reviews posted here. I personally thought the show had an interesting plot and the writing was extremely good. While I do agree that Roberts did not shine in the 1st act, that is attributable to the type of character she was required to play. Overall, I thought each character got his respective part down (although there is always room for improvement). ... read more Don't be discouraged by a lot of these negative reviews. I thought it was entertaining and interesting. |

| I saw the March 30 performance ( 2nd Night of Previews). I found that Julia Roberts was a bit weak in the first act. In the 2nd act she had more to work with, although her accent was a bit fake. Paul Rudd had the meatier roles in both acts, and he definelty has the acting chops. I blame most of the fault on the show on the writing.. You didnt seem to care about any of the characters at the end. |

I was disappointed in the weak story and the acting. Julia Roberts has absolutely no stage presence (and I usually make a point to see anything that she's in). I could not care less about her character. Paul Rudd was just boring. The applause at the end was the weakest I have ever heard from a NY audience - it was actually stronger when Julia first appeared on stage.
I read the reviews from the London production that Colin Firth ... read more was in and the critics had already mentioned the weak plot. I cannot imagine this lasting long. |

| I liked it!!! I found it interesting and artsy. It was surely a difficult play to act and I thought that Paul Rudd overacted a bit. I am not a fan of overacting which is why I think I enjoyed Julia and Bradley so much. Paul was not far off. In particular, I felt that his attempt to imitate dysfluency was suspect. As a speech and language therapist, my observation was more keen than most in that area. He could have been more believable. ... read more In addition, I agree with an earlier review with regard to Julia's southern accent. I would have preferred only a subtle accent. All in all, I did enjoy the play. I am not a broadway snob, so I think it was money well spent. My attention was with the play for the entire time. I would definitely recommend this!!!! |

| This was quite possibly my worst experience ever with live theater (and that includes high school plays I've seen). Julia Roberts was awful. In the second act, she brings back the ridiculous southern accent she had many years ago in "Steel Magnolias." It was laughable then, and what is laughable now is that an oscar-winning actress has been unable, in 17 years, to make any kind of improvement on this dialect. Paul ... read more Rudd's performance was better than Julia's, but a bit overacted nonetheless. Bradley Cooper gave the best performance of the night, although it was still only slightly above average. Beyond the performances, the script itself was a complete mess. Wanting to leave at intermission, I convinced myself that the second act had to be better. I was right - it was better but only SLIGHTLY so. Certainly nothing that would warrant staying that extra 45 minutes. The audience actually gave a standing ovation, so I can only assume it was comprised of out-of-towners who were simply delighted to see a "real" movie star and members of The Official Julia Roberts Fan Club. Save your money. It would be better spent on any other Broadway, off-Broadway, or off-off-Broadway show in the history of theater. |

Review by: Gina Hardin, Apr 3, 2006 |
| I am a huge Julia Roberts fan along with Paul Rudd and Bradley Cooper. I was not disappointed (although my husband was very disappointed. However, I hope that through the next couple of weeks of previews some of the kinks are worked out. Julia needs to overact a bit. Filmmaking requires a subletly that does not translate on the stage. What seems like yelling is what it takes to make it to the last room. Without a boom mike, you are the boom ... read more mike! Obviously memorizing a script is difficult but it needs to become more of a dance rather than "hey I did not forget my lines" where all three actors (Cooper the least of these) seem like they were waiting their turn to recite their lines, sort of like young children waiting to each tell their side of the story without a regard to the other friends in the conversation. I know that JR, PR and BC are all excellent actors, both in comedy and drama- both are required and employed in this script- so it needs to be more fluid. Granted, some of the dialogue is a bit weighy and indulgent, I have a relatively high IQ and I don't make that many obscure literary references when shooting the s^&t with friends and family. Am I really that simple and the NYC cultural elite are just passing me by? Anyway, once I really started to think about the characters, the pathos (look a 5 dollar word) I have related to the story line a lot more. it is a sad story, not a "JULIA" story, a human story. Unfortunately , I predict that she may be skewered by the critics. Of course, the theater community is so snobby. I think, to them, I just crawled out from under a trailer. Each deserve credit for taking chances. I just hope they slow it down a bit. it is journey, this story, not a race. |
