Excellent Review by: Legs, Apr 8, 2011 |
| This is closing soon so make a real effort to get a ticket. Perhaps one of the most thought-provoking plays in quite a while, The Whipping Man is also beautifully staged and performed. It is rare to see such a moving play that stays with you and stimulates thinking and interesting conversation. |

Powerful performances but talky. Review by: goldenboy, Mar 23, 2011 |
The subject matter sounded fascinating. A Jewish Man fights on the confederate side of the Civil war,and comes home wounded after the war to find his plantation home in ruins. Still remaining at the home are the former slaves who are now free. The Jewish Man fought for the losing side. The slaves nurse their former master back to heath from his wounds. Being raised Jewish, the slaves hold a Passover Seder and the irony of being slaves in ... read more Egypt is not lost on the audience. Jews and blacks are brothers in slavery. Much of the action is talked about taking place off stage. Some revelations are made about the past and manor. Some powerful acting especially by the slaves; great idea for a play; great set; great sound; great lighting but overallkind of talky and I lost interest. Has the potential to be a powerful play but not there yet. Powerful performances |

See The Whipping Man....NOW !!!!!! Review by: Diract 66, Mar 20, 2011 |
| You must see this show before it closes. It was a terrific play with excellent performances by all three actors, Andre'Braugher, Andre' Holland, and Jay Wilkison. The set, an old ravaged southern mansion right after the Civil War, set the mood of the play for the audience. Dark, dank, worn, and rain dripping from the partially opened roof. This is the story of two Negro slaves, and a southern Confederate soldier. All three Jews,... read more, and all three eventually having a Passover Sedar(dinner). But the story is much more than that and you should see the progression in this two act play. If you have never been to this theatre, don't worry, it is small and you can see from anywhere. You don't have to be Jewish. You don't have to be an African-American. You don't have to be from the South. All you have to do is appreciate Good Theatre. Believe me, you will have a very lively discussion about this play when it is over. |
