Review by: Bway girl, Nov 17, 2006 |
Saw The Vertical Hour last night. The cast, with the exception of Moore, were great. Moore was passionless in portraying Nadia Blye. Ironically, the character was meant to be someone who is passionate about her beliefs. It was uncomfortable to watch her. Her body langage awkward. I was with a friend and we continplated leaving during intermission. We stayed. The second half improved a great deal. Bill Nighy and the others ... read more were alive & great to watch. Overall, I found it long and boring.

Nighy good, Moore bad Review by: Jen the RN, Nov 16, 2006 |
| We saw a matinee performance on Novemder 15. I have decided that I am huge Bill Nighy fan and would probably enjoy seeing him in almost anything (but then I thought the same of Jim Dale until I endured the Threepenny Opera) Bill Nighy is a true stage actor, his whole body and self are in it. Unfortunately Juliane Moore is awful. Stilted and staunch, stiff and dry, she does not project and yet we are to believe her character to be a ... read more powerful poilitical thinker who posesses great bravery. Sadly, we do not believe it at all. The other cast members we very good, I especially like the first college student, but thought Moore ruined his comedic timing and sucked up all his energy. Go see it when her understudy is in. |

Look, it's not a good play. Review by: Broadway Fan, Nov 16, 2006 |
I went to the Nov. 11 show (with a friend). I've seen quite a lot of theatre, my friend very little -- we both felt it was so utterly boring, we left at intermission. Put it this way, this is one of those shows where folks who fancy themselves "intellectuals" laugh at the lines they think smart people should laugh at. Too afraid to admit while the ideas might be intriguing...this play is a total SNORE. The bored-stiff faces, silent crowd ... read more at intermission say it all. But it was the PLAY that was bad. I think Nighy and Moore could have shone in a livelier, more challenging play. Can't believe Sam Mendes rehearsed this and thought, "Yup, that's it! That's the play that's worthy of Broadway." Why didn't someone speak up and say "But the play is boring."? A case of talent derailed.

Review by: Bonnie, Nov 14, 2006 |
It pulled you in slowly and then you were hooked. The characters were smart and infused political debate into the dialogue without being preachy. Bill Nighy's quirky mannerisms and facial expressions were perfection and grounded the play. Julianne Moore, maybe because it is still early, took awhile to fit into her character. However, midway she was full stride. "The boyfriend" - Andrew Scott - terrific. The set also deserves mention, ... read more which was spectacularly simple...so creative. I can't imagine it any other way. Would recommend this for anyone who enjoys dramatic theatre.

The Vertical Hour was one big BORE!!! Don't waste your time -- or money!!! Review by: Totally Disappointed, Nov 13, 2006 |
The play was boring and very slow moving throughout. Julianne Moore appeared nervous and unsure of herself. Her delivery was flat and she did not deliver a compelling performance. I left at intermission and this is the first time I have ever done something like that but I could not convince myself or my three friends that things were going to improve. Bottomline, a total waste of an evening and the price of the four tickets. Don't ... read more make the same mistake! |

I was bored Review by: , Nov 13, 2006 |
| I attended Saturday night's performance. Quite frankly it was tiresome. Apart from the occasional good line, the play bored me. Julianne Moore was generally unconvincing. Bill Nighy was very good. |

Amazingly haunting story - I can't stop thinking about it Review by: , Nov 12, 2006 |
| We saw the Saturday matinee on Veteran's Day, just after coming upon the beginning of the parade on 5th Avenue. Perhaps the feeling of patriotism and war made a fertile backdrop to the play. In any event, though it seemed a bit flat at first - first scene and the morning scene in England - I found that after awhile I was totally sucked in as it/they gained energy and connection, with each other and the audience. Since leaving the theater, I ... read more keep thinking about the personal and global questions posed, haunted by the questions of what each of us should do in our personal relationships and the world. I think the play is amazing and the acting excellent. As this gels, I suspect everyone will agree. |

Good play..nervous first performance. .will improve over time.. Review by: Anand, Nov 10, 2006 |
Saw the Preview last night. Bill Nighy was simply fantastic, and so at ease on the stage. Juliane Moore needs to project further into the audience, and be less nervous in her delivery. She also needs to figure out how to walk across the stage, how to stand, and what to do with her hands. Her movements across the stage were quite stiff and very self conscious. I wanted to yell out..Relax..act and dont just deliver your dialogue. Some of ... read more the dialogue was a bit tedious, especially the initial scene with the student, where Juliane was just focussing on delivering the lines. Interesting play, with good performance by Bill and Andrew, and a nervous, and unsure performance by Julianne. I know she has the stuff to improve and relax...and let it rip..that is what her character should be doing..angry, frustrated..her movement and actions should also reflect this, rather than just standing motionless, with hands by her side most of the time. |

The Vertical Waste of Time...and it's two hours, not one Review by: Disappointed, Nov 10, 2006 |
The Vertical Hour is a colossal disappointment. Where to begin? Julianne Moore is a stunning actress, a true talent. Yet, one would never know it from this horribly flat and wooden performance. Thank God the wonderful Bill Nighy somewhat saved what was a clunky, obvious two hours of rhetoric with no substance.
Save your money. And, your time. |
