See it before it closes! Review by: , Jan 7, 2010 |
Loved it - see it before it closes. Thought it was funny and the actors were all wonderful. Mark-Paul Gosselaar is hot, hot, hot. |

Solid show highlighted by strong acting Review by: IggyCat, Dec 27, 2009 |
| Some of the reviews here are odd. One complains that it's all dialogue, and no music. Um, it's a play. What did you expect? We really enjoyed this performance, in particular the excellent acting. Our only little quibble is that the stage manager is a bit mis-cast, since she is clearly considerably older than both men but has a romantic dynamic with both. That hardly distracts from the excellent work by all three actors,... read more, the amusing and biting dialogue, and the overall very enjoyable experience. |

No star, understudies big star, who understudies big co-star? Review by: Diract 66, Dec 11, 2009 |
| This is a very nice 90 minutes in theatre that starts out with a 'Bang', literally! The beginning monologue by Justin Kirk is a highlight of the show and one that many acting students will probably learn. I recommend this show to people involved in theatre because of the premise, an understudy craving to perform in a star driven vehicle, and all the inside theatre humor that those involved in theatre will surely appreciate as I am sure ... read more many have experienced in rehearsals and performance. All three actors did a fine job, although the story did have some flaws. This show within a show about Kafka surely looks like a bomb, even in a off off broadway house, and why would this show have two big hollywood stars in it and one understudy the lead role? The set was nothing special and did not add to the play and the last scene was ???? Julie White was totally frustrated with the actors, the 'high' tech person, and her personal life. I know it's hard to believe there are stage managers like this!!!!!, but her performance was terrific. I left this show wanting something more, but I was somewhat satisfied with what I saw. It was a very funny show, Actors can relate, and don't miss the opening. That is what you will remember after The End. |

The Understudy ? Overated ! Review by: Frodo5 , Nov 23, 2009 |
| There were some laughs but for me and my wife , this play was disappointing . 90 minutes of dialogue - no music - the actor's voices could be louder. We saw no reason for the actor's to have to drop the F- Bomb numerous times ! The actor's themselves were good , the play just did not work for us. We saw "Ordinary Day's" a few weeks ago and enjoyed that much more plus it was only $20 ! |

Loved The Understudy, Highly Recommended Review by: BroadwayBabySawIt, Nov 15, 2009 |
| The Understudy is a great show - wonderful writing, great acting and directing, fun sets - this one beats most Broadway shows for sheer entertainment value. We loved all 3 actors, but particuarly Justin Kirk as Harry, who really captures the love of an actor for acting, despite poverty and disappointment, he just wants to tell stories, and he beats the "name" star at being talented, innovative and dedicated to his craft. This one is a must see,... read more, and we hope that it runs and runs. Long live The Understudy! |

Review by: Linda B, Nov 5, 2009 |
I had a hip replacement a month prior to seeing The Understudy. It was my first field trip and I had some fears. The personnel at the Laura Pels Theater could not have been nicer. They stowed my walker and helped me navigate the situation. Kudos as all theaters are not so helpful. The Understudy was the smartest show that I have seen in all of 2009. I went to about 20 shows this year prior to surgery. Funny, clever, and well executed.... read more. Bravo. |

Never under-estimate *The Understudy* Review by: Issi, Nov 3, 2009 |
| Saw this show Halloween evening. The show is very well written, the actors make the absolute most of the lines and it's a bloody riot beginning to end. I saw *8* shows last week and this was most enjoyable. |

We loved this show! Review by: , Oct 27, 2009 |
Saw this play in preview. The cast was amazing (Justin Kirk especially), as is the play. Ninety minutes of uninterrupted smart drama and well-acted, and super-funny dialogue; A wonderful show I can't recommend enough.
