Forget what the critics say! Review by: Jersey, Jun 19, 2006 |
| Despite being panned by those in the know, I went to see ThreePenny Opera. Yes, it was somewhat 'edgy' and possibly even vulgar at times but it was funny. Alan Cummmings was great and Jim Dale as Mr. Peachum was a scream. I thought Cyndi lauper was alright although I think I only expected more because of her reputation. The stars of the show, as far as I am concerned, are Nellie McKay who plays Polly and Brian Charles Rooney as Lucy Brown. ... read more Nellie has a wonderful voice and was very engaging as Polly. Brian Charles Rooney was incredible ---stole the show with Lucy's Aria!!!! Better get to NYC quickly if you want to see it ---the engagement is almost over. |

CABERET MEETS THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW Review by: aunt ME, Jun 4, 2006 |
I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THIS SHOW BECAUSE OF THE SONG MACK THE KNIFE AND TO SEE EDIE FALCO. I HAD TO EXCHANGE MY ORIGINAL TICKET AND WENT ON MAY 21 WITH CYNDI LAUPER IN IT. I WAS INITIALLY STUNNED AND HORRIFIED AND WAS TEMPTED TO LEAVE AFTER THE INTERMISSION BUT STUCK IT OUT AND I WAS GLAD I DID. JIM DALE WAS AS USUAL SUPERB, CYNDI LAUPER DID A VERY GOOD JOB, ALAN CUNNING WAS VERY GOOD, BUT BRIAN CHARLES ROONEY WAS AMAZING AND BLEW ... read more ME AWAY WITH HIS PERFORMANCE. NEVER READ OR SAW THE ORIGINAL BUT WALLACE SHAWN SHOULD NOT HAVE MESSED WITH IT. HIS INTRETATION WAS TOO EXTREME. ALTHOUGH I REALIZED AFTER A WHILE THAT IT WAS DEPICTING THE SEEDIER SIDE OF LIFE, I FEEL HE STILL WENT OVER AND ABOVE WHAT WAS CALLED FOR. THE COSTUMES WERE BIZARE TO SAY THE LEAST. ALL THIS DETRACTED FROM THE PERFORMANCES OF THE TALENTED PEOPLE IN THE SHOW. AFTER THE FIRST HALF HOUR I THOUGHT, THIS IS LIKE CABERET, BUT MORE LIKE CABERET MEETS THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW. BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME.
I WAS SURPRISED THAT THERE WAS NO CURTAIN CALL AND I WAS PARTICULARY OFFENDED BY THE NEON SIGN THAT READ "GO HOME". |

| The music and the characters in tis play were boring. The play dragged and the subject matter was uninteresting. Be prepared to be shocked by antics and shenanigans! |

Studio 54 has never been so boring Review by: folkyboy, May 28, 2006 |
Like everyone else, I saw the cast and immediately bought tickets paying no mind to the storyline or anything about it. And like everyone else, I stayed through intermission thinking maybe I didn't just waste $100 on a ticket and maybe I'm just missing some form of depth in there somewhere.
Then I saw the half naked boy on the neon horse and knew for sure I got ripped off. Someone should stop letting Madonna direct musicals. Gay sex isn't ... read more shocking anymore Ciccone. Stop with your leather drama! |

Mixed bag,, but worth a view Review by: RSK, May 13, 2006 |
I walked away from this show with mixed feelings.... The performances and staging were amazing. The show had a great conecpt and I loved the whole punk S&M costumes.. What failed for me was the book. To me the whole show was only interesting durring the musical numbers, thats where the show comes alive. Having never seen a prior production of this show, Im not sure how much they changed the libretto, it just didnt seen to work. ... read more Special kudos to Anna G, Jim Dale, Cyndi L, Cummings,Nellie MC, and Brian Rooney ( Lucy Brown)

What A WAY TO Ruin a Show Review by: okie, May 5, 2006 |
| Walked out after Intermission The entire production left little to applaud Saw the original and it had spunk 40 years plus years ago---The casting was horrible and the director lost the talents of some very good actors. Roundabout is not having an all around good season except for HARRY CONNICK JR> |

The best part..... Review by: PinkPainter, Apr 24, 2006 |
| OK for all of you who left before the 2nd act you missed the best performance. Lucy Brown(Brian Charles Rooney) who was played by a man could sing like no tomorrow! Not only was his singing incredible he was funny and entertaining. His ability to sing in the original key was amazing. He deserves much more credit than is being given to him. I think Lucy Brown stole the show! Just seeing him was worth the ticket. As for the whole show I thought it ... read more was great. It's offensive and alienating just as it should be. It may be playing on Broadway but it is theater plain and simple. I thought it was very good. |

Not worth my two hours Review by: Tati, Apr 22, 2006 |
| I have to say that the show was way too staccato for me. The songs did not flow with the story. I was unimpressed with Cyndi Lauper and Alan Cummings' performances. Notes were too deep for Cyndi to sing at times. Ana Gasteyer was funny, but not funny enough to keep me past intermission. |

Enjoyable and different! Review by: phonia33, Apr 20, 2006 |
Saw the first preview and very much enjoyed the show, although certainly still needed some fine tuning with pacing. Enjoyed Alan, Cyndi and Ana Gasteyer especially. This is NOT a children's show, but an updated period piece intended to comment on the human condition with irony, humor and provocation.

Stars, Are Best Thing About The Threepenny Opera Review by: FAR, Apr 20, 2006 |
The Threepenny Opera has enough good parts to receive an overall good review. But if one is to review the whole you can't miss the disconnect between characters. Alan Cummings "Mack The Knife" does not appear with Mr. Peachum; therefore we miss on a what could have been a great scene. Even individually there are those parts that were just badly perfumed by Cindy Lauper. Mizrahi's wardrobe is definitely over the top as ... read more he dressed the robbers and prostitutes in leather tight shorts. A scene more appropriate for Pricilla Queen of The Dessert than The Three Penny Opera.
A good show to see the stars up close if you are willing to pay $111 per seat.

So-so production that doesn't engage the audience Review by: Ravenwood, Apr 20, 2006 |
| My husband and I attended the April 4th performance, and while it wasn't a complete loss, we did leave at the intermission. It seemed like most of the actors didn't really want to be there, and they didn't create any energy on the stage. At one point the audience is invited to 'sing along' and the house was mostly silent. In fact it was hard to tell there was an audience present at all. Very few laughs and very little reaction. The whole ... read more thing just fell flat. |

Brecht on Broadway - Wow Review by: operagal, Apr 17, 2006 |
| Saw a preview Easter Sunday. The first act needed some pacing improvements; the second act was wonderful. The opera is funny and grim and the production conveyed those qualities with its style. The performers were individually imporessive but needed a bit more gelling together; with a little more time it should be fantastic. It is great to see a piece like this on Broadway. |

Warning to all non-perverts Review by: Zach Green, Apr 11, 2006 |
| I am a child who had to endure the first act of this show. Thank god for intermission; I am so glad I left with my mom. What I saw of it was just crap. The actors were all wonderful, although I didn't like Alan's accent. The re-adaptation of it is horrid. It has unneeded profanity, sex, and more sex. I think the director of this show had to have been a fricken' pervert to have directed it. Do not buy tickets, even at a discount price. ... read more Never take your kids there! |
