Wanted to Love it but.... Review by: Frosty, Jan 14, 2009 |
| A rather odd mismash that kinda works, but at this preview nite, in the end, mostly didn't shine enough. It's suppose (I think) to be campy fun but it was not over-the-top enough to make the material work, in my opinion. Instead it's delivered rather straight. Case n' point. It's odd the Mother (Kathleen Turner) and Son (whose sole purpose is to move the story along and is on stage more than Charles, is the least interesting of all the ... read more characters) Wrong! Ms. Turners performance couldn't exactly be called award winning, either. This didn't help the evening. I thought she would have risen to the occassion and given more than she did. Since she and the Son's character are central to the story, and so much time (energy dip) is spent focused on them, their roles need 'something' to elevate the lull in this work. The Son's performance although good is not an interesting character per se. On the contrary, the Nurse and Zygote both gave 'outstanding' performances and brilliant characterizations. It is wonderful to see Mr. Busch again. He is a star who is stretching himself creatively. He has a way with his characters and the written word, however, this work has too much but not enough of what it needs to really work - as a result the audience's temperature seemed interested but subdued. And no one goes to the theater to be subdued. Good Luck with the run... |
