The School of Lies...really flies....see it before it dies. Review by: Diract 66, May 13, 2011 |
| The TRUTH about The School of Lies is Jean-Baptiste Poquelin would be rolling over in his grave laughing if he could see the great job that David Ives and the CSC cast are doing in his updated and truly funny play. If you can see any play Off- Broadway this season, see this. The set is sparse, but totally appropriate for this farce. If you want to see how one small role can steal a show from a very talented cast, watch Steven Boyer as the ... read more servant. Hamish Linklater is the star that holds this whole show together changing from a man who hates life, to a man who loves life, and then everyone loves him. But every actor is wonderful with the rapid fire language rhyme and character interpretations. Don't leave till after this great curtain call. This show closes May 22, so in the month of June go to Jersey and see the original at the Shakespeare Theatre of NJ in Madison, and compare. Either way you will not be disappointed. So original, so humorous, so well acted. SO SEE IT.....NOW...YOU COW...I THINK THIS RHYMES SOMEHOW!!! |

If you love language, don’t miss this one Review by: Tome Bestor, May 1, 2011 |
Hamish Linklater probably thinks I’m stalking him. On my last trip to New York, he was in the same audience as I was at two different shows – something we both noticed. Earlier on this trip he was in the audience at “The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures.” This time, however, no coincidences were required – he’s starring in David Ives’ brilliant, biting, hilarious adaptation of Moliere’s “The ... read more Misanthrope.” Ives has translated the classic into mostly contemporary language – but he’s kept it in verse, which sounds like it could be clumsy – but it rarely is. And since Ives has his characters using words and phrases that wouldn’t sound out of place on any street corner or college dorm – “What’s yours or mine or any man’s friendship worth, if you give it to any douche on Earth?” – it still feels incredibly current and relevant. Which, of course, adds to the bite when Moliere’s timeless satire is aimed not just as mendacity (as the title implies), but politics, society and culture. (“Sycophants who are brown well past their noses,” was another favorite of mine.) You’d have to really hate verse not to find something to like about “The School for Lies.” Linklater (who you might know from his TV work on "The New Adventures of Old Christine") is deadpan funny, and his supporting cast mostly just as sure-footed. Ives’ script delivers zinger after zinger and one inventive rhyme after another. And if that doesn’t sell you, it’s worth the ticket price just to see William Ivey Long’s costumes. (John Lee Beatty’s set is lovely, too.) If you love language, don’t miss this one. |

Funniest show in years! Do not miss School for Lies! Highly recommended Review by: BroadwayBabySawIt, Apr 30, 2011 |
Wow! We were just blown away By this amazing, fun play It's all done in rhyme But fast flies the time It's the best show on Off or Broadway! OK, we can't compete with David Ives' great script - but it just inspires you to try rhyming, it's fast, it's furious, it's up to date, it's hilarious, and this is the very cast to deliver it. Among the actors, we have to single out Hamish Linklater, who was wonderful in Merchant ... read more of Venice, but really outdoes himself here, and shows that he has a comic side to match the dashing side. And Steven Boyer is a wonderful comic in the role of the servants - just don't ask him to to serve it up on a silver platter. All of the cast are terrific - Hoon Lee as the reluctant cross dresser, and Rick Holmes, Matther Maher and Frank Harts as the wooing trio are also just amazing. The actresses are top notch too - Mamie Gummer just glows, Alison Fraser has vicious delight, and Jenn Gambatese has the best comic timing we've seen since Nina Arianda in Venus with Fur. We were amazed at the timing, energy and comic expertise evident in this great cast, the wonderful direction (as always) by Walter Bobbie, and the great set. A fast moving show, but thanks to the skill of this great cast, we heard every word (hoorah!), and loved this great show! Highly recommended for everyone, a must see for sure! Get tickets now - the Classic Stage Co has another hit on their hands for sure. |
