Old F words here...Fantastically funny farcical family!!!!!!!!!! Review by: Diract 66, Dec 1, 2009 |
| Go see this show if you want to appreciate good comedy the way it used to be before todays crop of playwrites decided to use profanity in place of story. As the curtain opens up we see a beautiful set design, intricate in every detail. It got a well deserved applause. The acting was excellent, and Jan Maxwell stole the show with a great scene where she really takes over the stage. A monologue for all aspiring female acting students. The story is ... read more old, about an acting family of egocentric people, based on the Barrymores, and involved with their decisions on living their lives or choosing to live their 'actors' life. Three acts may seem long because the theatre of today cannot come up with anything interesting enough to last more than ninety minutes. Take your time, tell a story, make us laugh, and see this show! You will see that for every actor that leaves us another one is born to take their place. |

A Trace of Royalty Review by: Mr. C, Nov 16, 2009 |
| The second act made it wothwhile to sit for almost 3 hours. At times it was difficult to hear everything; we were sitting in the mezzanine. I didn't particularly like the ending. |

| If you can get a discount ticket and you like old comedies, then go see it BUT I recommend leaving after the second act (yes this show is 3 hours with a third act). The highlight of the show is Jan Maxwell. |

Pretty Good Fun Review by: Squirt, Nov 9, 2009 |
We saw the show with friends on Friday Nov 5 . We were in the Mezzanine but had a hard time hearing . We felt the two lead actresses tended to speak too fast and we missed some of the jokes . The Scene where Jan Maxwell just loses it is worth the price of Admission and we heard EVERY word As an aside might I say the seats were the most comfortable theatre seats I've been in |

| It's a pity such a talented cast is wasted on a vacuous play. |

Theater Royalty Review by: PAEM, Oct 22, 2009 |
| What a delightful afternoon of theater! Worth the price if only for the brilliant Ms Harris and Ms Maxwell. The play still has loads of charm and the set and costumes are lovely. A few weaknesses in the casting, but overall a very enjoyable production. And not a foul word to be heard...like a breath of fresh air. |

Talented Cast Wasted On Dated And Trying Material. Skip It. Review by: dngrchk, Sep 21, 2009 |
| As the curtain opened, I was wowed by a well-crafted set with great attention to detail capturing the interior of a well-heeled family's New York apartment. My praise ends there. Although the performances were commendable with veteran Tony Roberts and Reg Rogers standing out, the play itself, written in 1927 felt each of it's 72 years. At three acts, this play is one act too long, but I was able to treat myself to a short nap during the third ... read more act. Ana Gasteyer, a wonderful comedic actress is wasted with a few shrill lines and manic aping. The comedy of the overlapping dialogue during family fights loses it's appeal quickly, although, that trough is visited many times too often. John Glover, another welcome sight is unfortunately underused. The play seemed bi-polar, zig-zagging between classic slapstick and over-the-top hysterics with darker, more somber drama that felt out of place. The characters all felt so dated and manufactured, that you are not invested in their fates, you only wonder what the weather will be like once you are finally emancipated from the theater. Luckily these tickets were discounted, but anything short of free was too much to spend. |

CROWNS OFF TO ROYAL FAMILY! Review by: addisondewitt, Sep 17, 2009 |
| I entered the theater with great trepidation as I had seen an earlier revival of this late 1920's play and had not liked it. (I only went to this one as it was a part of the MTC subscription.) What a terrific surprise! Under Doug Hughes' unerring direction and a cast of brilliant performances, this production is one of the most satisfying I have seen in a long time. Is John Glover one of the great actors of our time! To quote a woman ... read more from the hinterlands, "You betcha!" Has Rosemary Harris ever been better? Doubtful. Is Jan Maxwell positively brilliant? Count on it! Is Ana Gastayer a brilliant comedian with perfect timing? Absolutely! They, and the rest of the large cast, are amazing. Yes, it's a long play, just under 3 hours, with two intermissions, but the time flew and I, along with a cheering audience, was with it every step of the way...and this was at only the second preview! I am not a seer, but I'll bet that this will be one of the best reviewed shows of the year with people clamoring for tickets. A terrific night in the theater!!! Bravo! |
