Don't Miss this Winner Review by: Clint, Mar 7, 2007 |
I came into this show thinking I would notice Danza's performance more (meaning, I would be unsatisfied) based on the comments on this board. I really love Nathan Lane, but Danza exceeded my expectations. To the contrary, I found myself longing for Broderick, not Lane.
In any event, go see it. It is a must. I cannot explain it other than to say it is a great ride -- like a great roller coaster -- each turn and scene just keeps ... read more giving and giving. The satire is deep enough for both insiders and outsiders of the theatre industry. You must see it! |

great! Review by: Sandy, Feb 12, 2007 |
| got to see this a few weeks ago with Tony Danza & Hunter Foster. Tony was definitely mis cast, but did put in 110% effort, and Hunter, it was like he was born to play Leo, absolutely adorable. I enjoyed the show! We got the tickets from TKTS in the mezz and they were fine. |

Good show, but... Review by: The Pauper, Jan 29, 2007 |
| They should sack the person responsible for casting Tony Danza as Max Bialystock. Nothing against Mr. Danza, he is a talented and likable guy. But his miscast performance in the lead role of Bialystock is almost painful to watch. Fortunately, the performances from the rest of cast and the show as a whole is enough to absorb it. The music is great, the songs are funny and catchy, and the politically incorrect Mel Brooks humor is irresistible. |

See it when one of the leads is recast Review by: kernel, Jan 5, 2007 |
| Imagine Mickey Rooney in his prime trying his hardest to play Tarzan-wouldn't work. Neither does Tony Danza playing Max Bialystock. Danza sings and dances and does give his all but he is totally miscast. On another note, I tried so hard NOT to compare it to the original movie which I love--no comparison--Mostel, Wilder, Shawn simply will never be outdone. |

Sunday performance review Review by: Melissa, Nov 24, 2006 |
| I saw the show on November 19th, I found it to be a fun and enjoyable performance, but it did not blow my socks off for the money we pay to sit in a seat and be entertained for 2 hours. Hunter Foster (as Leo) and John Treacy Eagan (as Max) are both outstanding performers, but I think the audience compares them too much to Lane and Broderick. I went on a Sunday afternoon, where the audience is usually not as enthusiastic as it is for an evening ... read more Friday/Saturday night show. I found myself laughing and enjoying many parts of the show, but the folks around me were dead (until after Intermission). However, the scene "Keep it Gay" is worth your ticket. |

not all that funny Review by: NedRacine, Sep 30, 2006 |
| Although mildly amusing, and sometimes eliciting a chuckle, I found it to be no where as funny as it has been purported to be. I would recommend instead seeing the movies (1968 & 2004) instead. Humor is a funny thing, and mine did not respond to this production. |

Gary Beach - worth every penny! Review by: mk, Jul 28, 2006 |
Saw this the other night.
Agree with the previous reviewer that the show is like an old-fashioned musical in the best sense - the songs are catchy, the choreography fun and clever. But the off-colour humour in the lyrics and dialogue give the show a modern, satirical feel.
Most of the cast I saw were replacements from the regular (NOT original) cast - for Leo, Ulla, and Liebkin. They all did a fine job - especially Hunter Foster ... read more who was replacing Roger Bart as Leo. Brad Musgrove was very funny as Carmen Ghia. John Treacy Egan was good as Bialystock and had a fine voice, though he seemed to be basically channeling Nathan Lane.
But the star of the show, the one who definitely made it worth seeing on stage versus just seeing the wonderful film version - is Gary Beach as Roger Debries. The man just lights up the stage - even after doing this part for the umpteenth time. |

Musical Comedy's Greatest Gift Review by: David, Jul 14, 2006 |
| While the show may not be as exhilarating and fresh as it was when the original cast was onstage, this current long-runner still leaves audiences in uproarious fits of laughter. The real enduring star is the classic Broadway comedy score and the fearless humor that is distinctly Mel Brooks. The experience of seeing it live is what separates it from the recent musical film based directly on this show. Musicals are unlikely to capture the madcap ... read more spirit of any show when translated to a different medium. Therefore, it's a necessity for all the viewers of the movie to catch this original presentation, as there is nothing like a show on Broadway. It is a purely old-fasioned and traditional throwback with a contemporary wink now and then. I implore you to invade the theater like the borders of Poland for this gloriously silly and catchy spectacle that has revived the musical comedy genre! |
