Excellent night out Review by: KK, Apr 17, 2007 |
We saw this show last Thursday evening and loved it. The sheer energy of the cast, the music and the dancing are a joy. If you love Wicked, Cats, Riverdance etc you'll have a great evening. Ignore the critics - the cast got a standing ovation (okay not unusual for NY but for me, a brit, to get to my feet it is unusual). As usual critics get it wrong - in their opinion if you go out feeling good it can't be a good show. |

| What a show! The music and lyrics were incredible and the queen's costumes were magnificent. We enjoyed it from beginning to end and would see it again and again. Nice to see something different on the broadway stage. |

Loved it! Loved It! Loved it! Review by: IM2FUN4U, Apr 15, 2007 |
| Loved it! The story started a little slow but picked up. It kept me entertained the entire time. It was comedy meets love story meets Irish lore. I have slept through many a shows and this was not one of them. Took my mother and 14 year old son and they enjoyed as well. The music was good, the sets were great, and the cast did an excellent job. Would recommend for others to see! |

If you're looking for good dancing... Review by: alaisa, Apr 14, 2007 |
| Les Miz meets Riverdance is how I can best describe The Pirate Queen. The lyrics are trite, the music is forgettable... what a way to ruin a good story. The dancing is probably the most redeeming part of this show, but it seemed as if the dancers weren't using Irish dance taps and the orchestra was substituting tapping noises... it was odd. At least you could tell the dancers were *really* dancing. They were fabulous. I ... read more walked out singing songs from Les Miz. There was also a moment when I started singing "This is the Song that goes like this" from Monty Python. It was very predictable. The "new" style of singing all the dialogue was worthless in this. |

Great Show .... Wonderful evening of entertainment Review by: Darin, Apr 14, 2007 |
A TRUE evening of Entertainment !
We certainly had our doubts by reading the reviews from critics. ( Definitely Misguided ).
The music is wonderful and we love the big belter voices. Stephanie Block is fantastic, just as she was in " Wicked ". The costumes were wonderfully designed, Especially Queen Elizabeth. As for the dancing, what a joy to watch. I am sure the Irish people are very proud, as they should be to ... read more have a wonderful story in their honor. The music as of yet is not memorable. But, once it is recorded and listened to a bit. It will be endearing.
I will say if you like; Les Mis / Miss Saigon you will truly have a great evening with " The Pirate Queen ".
It does take close attention to get into the story. But, once you do it takes off.
If you do not like wonderful singing ( and there is alot of it ) energetic dancing and all in all a solid good performance by all. Then go see a movie ! :)
We loved it ! |

Disneyland Comes to Ireland... Review by: siobhan, Apr 13, 2007 |
| I saw PQ in previews and was very disappointed. Technically, it was the best theatre has to offer. The costumes were lovely. Other than that, it was a hackneyed mess. The only bit of verisimiltude came from Anya Kelly (hope I've got that right) with her lovely sean nos singing. This was not a Disney production, but it might have been subtitled "Disneyland comes to Ireland" as the production values are truly all the show has to offer. The ... read more stag party scene was ripped right from Oliver's OOm Pah Pah and what was it doing in a show about rural Ireland? The trek back to Clare Island could have been set in Anatevka. Ireland has such a rich musical heritage, non of the songs were memorable or even vaguely Irish. I groaned when Grainne got out of her childbed to lift the sword...how unbearably corny. From what I've read about Grace O'Malley, she really doesn't need to rely on Maureen O'Hara to dignify her. I DID love Queen Liz! Elizabeth I is a well known figure, and spoofing her is OK. Poor Grainne winds up being laughable and there's not enough known history about her for the audience to get any of the tongue in cheek. Liked the sails going up and down. I was in Dublin when the reviews came out and have to say, I agreed with all. |

Abandon Ship Review by: , Apr 13, 2007 |
| I think the people who liked this show were either paid by the producers or are touched in a special way. This was the worst show I've ever seen in my life. I was torn whether is actually was worse than the Sweet Smell of Success, but then remembered that at least that show had one good number, Dirt. After seeing Pirate Queen, I honestly cannot remember the tune of any of the songs. The only bright spot in the show was to see what outrageous ... read more outfit Queen Elizabeth would wear in her next appearance. I found myself hoping each number would end so she could come out on the stage to provide some much needed light to this lousy production. I just heard that they are recording it. Why would anyone want to pay to listen to this music more than once. Wasn't one listen torture enough. I do no fault the performers though. There is no amount of vocal ability or acting that could save this show. Unlike Les Mis and Miss Saigon, you will not here any of these tunes in a Broadway review ever. |

A Day Beyond Belclaire... Review by: LimelightMike, Apr 12, 2007 |
This spectacular new musical adventure tells of a compelling, inspiring woman Grace 'Grania' O'Malley (the sensationally talented and beautiful Stephanie J. Block): a heroine who led an extraordinary life as a pirate, chieftain, lover and mother in 16th Century Ireland. Her quest to protect her people - and save her one true love Tiernan (the masterful Hadley Fraiser, making his Broadway debut) - embarks her on a thrilling voyage that climaxes ... read more in a heated confrontation with the one woman more powerful than her... her fierce rival Queen Elizabeth I (the enchanting Linda Balgord) of England.
Along with a supporting cast of Marcus Chait (Donal), Jeff McCarthy (Dubdhara), and William Youmans (Lord Bingham), this production easily becomes one of the most heavily-anticipated, greatly-appreciated theatrical experiences in well over two decades. Not since Boublil and Schonberg's LES MISERABLES, have sat down to witness a true-to-life epic, with grand storytelling, a sweeping score (truly unmatched melodies and soaring harmonies), outstanding vocalists, and an orchestra that makes EVERY song sound extremely fresh, crisp, and monumental. The lighting is great, too, as are the marvelous special effects! If you're in the mood for a GREAT night of high-quality, beautifully-crafted theatre, see THE PIRATE QUEEN.

Old-fashioned musical enjoyment Review by: woodman, Apr 12, 2007 |
| We saw Pirate Queen in opreviews on March 24. From the haunting flute at the beginning of the show we knew we were watching a winner. The voices were amazing, costumes authentic looking, settings were minimalistic but impressive, music is memorable, and the use of Irsish step dancing, which was incredible, choreography is dedicated to those moments in life when dancing would and still does take place-weddings,births,etc. Queen Elizabeth and Grace ... read more did not break out into Irish dancing. I think the authors are more intelligent than that. It's time to stop comparing this show to Les Miz,critics. The source material of that show required an epic take.Sometimes one wonders what THEY are seeing from the 10th row!Get off the high horse and let the audience judge for themselves. A show should close or succeed from word of mouth, not from word of critic. |
