| great performances from stephanie block, hadley fraser and linda belnod, but the production was clunky and whilst the music great and the costumes looked fabulous there was to much riverdancey top tapping naueseating irish dancing - could be because the show's main backers where behind riverdance and they pushed for it to be there. worth seeing for sjb's performance alone, but felt overly long at 2 hours and 30 minutes |

Choppy beginning...Great story Review by: Sarah, May 4, 2007 |
The show got right to the point with the love story so it was initially hard to follow. But I have to say I would see it again. I only have to laugh at the thickness of those who went to a Boublil and Schonberg musical expecting it to sound completely new. That's quite like going to a Fosse show and expecting it to be all new steps. Of course you heard some of Miz, and some of Saigon too. The two shows also sound alike if you play them side by ... read more side. They all have the same writers believe it or not and a writer's style is almost impossible to change.
The dancing was incredible, jaw dropping in most cases. Stephanie J. Block's plays a wonderful Grace O'Malley. Her voice is strong and beautiful, it sent goosebumps up my arms. Hadley Fraser, as Tiernan played opposite Block, is great and not bad on the eyes to boot. Linda Balgord played Queen Elizabeth I. The way she played her character almost came of as comedic, she definately took herself lightly, but when strength was needed Balgord delivered in character and voice. Marcus Chait, Jeff McCarthy, and William Youmans also put on stunning performances, though I would have liked to hear more from Jeff McCarthy, his character echoed ValJean in strength and charisma as well as fatherly love.
The set was stunning. It was very easy to get lost in the world and the ship. The stage was a bit small but it hardly inhibited the show. Lighting complimented the show, though nearly blinded my mother and me at one point, but that was just because of where we were sitting. The use of shadows was almost more impressive than the use of the lights, extremely clever.
As I had said bfore the very beginning of the musical was a bit choppy. It seemed as if they had been trying to stuff as much background into as little time as possible, so they could get to the meat of the story. Once the show got rolling though it all came together.
All in all it was a spectactular show and one of the very few out now that is not based on a movie or a classic band. Appreciate it for what it is, a showcase for wonderful singers, skilled dancers, and great numbers. A show that displays the power women did not have but took anyway, two strong felmale leader face off, and come full circle. Full of emotion touching moments, and funny ones too it is a worthwhile production that can stand on it's own. Do not cry because it almost sounds similar to another musical, another great musical, by great writers. |

Pirate Queen is an audience favorite! Review by: Joe M, Apr 30, 2007 |
| I saw "The Pirate Queen" Saturday April 28th. The production is awesome...beautiful costumes ....and wonderful dance numbers.....the score isn't as beautiful as Les Miserables or Ms. Saigon but the audience loved the show giving the cast a standing ovation...I think the critics were wrong on this one....the dud is "CURTAINS"... |

Pleasantly Surprised Review by: Mr C, Apr 30, 2007 |
My wife and friends just saw The Pirate Queen and we enjoyed it. The singing, dancing, acting, costumes and setting were superb. It was an entertaining afternoon at the theater.
We truly don't understand why this musical was given so many negative reviews.
We would recommend it. |

There's other musicals out there that are way better Review by: Disappointed , Apr 30, 2007 |
| I went into the show with a very open mind after the critics crucified it in the press. I have to say that the show really was mediocre. It was certainly well-intentioned and could have told a good tale but there were too many storylines that were combined and never fleshed out. The singing and acting were fine, the songs were decent and the Irish dancing was entertaining but there it struck me as rather haphazard and not well thought out. ... read more Don't spend your money on full priced tickets and if you still want to see it - look for a really good bargain. |

the pirate queen is worth your voyage Review by: lovemusicals, Apr 30, 2007 |
Certainly not a perfect show; BUT if you want an entertaining afternoon or evening with wonderful musical performances, this show is worth the discounted price of admission. The singing is first rate and the choreogeraphy is fine. If you expect too much, most of the shows on Broadway don't measure up. Why not just go to see some talented and spirted performers and just have a good time?

Pathetic excuse for a show Review by: sssatin, Apr 29, 2007 |
| I saw the first half of the show while visiting Chicago in November. That's all I could stomach without getting physically ill. The staging, the acting, the music, the lyrics, the storyline, the costumes-EVERYTHING, was SOOOOO badly designed and poorly done, I was embarrassed for the theatre-starved Chicagoans. Those poor folks paid New York prices for what they thought was Broadway and got total crap! There wasn't even a distinctive melody or ... read more tune. Just a lot of bland, dull, monotonous loud music. When I returned to NY, I told my friends to see it only on one condition - if the theatre gives you free tix, free dinner, free parking and pays for your babysitter. Otherwise, go watch the trucks at the A&P get unloaded for more enjoyment. |

Worth every minute!! Review by: RG , Apr 29, 2007 |
| I had read a lot of reviews both pro and con - decided to 'take the plunge' and loved every minute of it. The production was superb and helped to tell the relatively unknown story of Grace O'Malley. I recommend the 'Pirate Queen' highly! |

Glad I only paid half price. Wish I'd spent less! Review by: , Apr 29, 2007 |
| Tried to be Les Mis meets Riverdance. Should have picked one or the other because the combination does nothing right. I have not been so disappointed in a Broadway show in my memory. It seems like it had potential and could have been a good show but it just misses. People in the audience seemed so ready for some upbeat songs and decent Irish dancing. There were only a few instances of these but when they did come the audience went wild. ... read more Otherwise the few tolerable moments did nothing to outweigh the dark, dismal production. I did not read any reviews before buying the tickets and that was my mistake. The voices were fine but the songs and sung dialogue were painful. I could not recommend this show to anyone. What a sorry mess! |

A Tony Winner in the Making Review by: , Apr 26, 2007 |
| Absolutely incredible. The acting, direction and music were exactly what I expected. This returns Schoenberg and Boublil to the form of "Les Mis'" and "Miss Saigon." "Martin Guerre" was disappointing. "The Pirate Queen is exalting." |

Full house and standing ovation show! Review by: Naplesgirl, Apr 22, 2007 |
Did the NY Times reviewer see the same Pirate Queen that I saw today? Great singing, just enough dancing, and terrific costumes made this play well worth it. The theater was full and the performers received a standing ovation for their great performances.
Act one had 14 scenes and the time flew by...treat yourself to a great show! |

wonderful singing, contagious dancing...go see it! Review by: bettyt2123, Apr 21, 2007 |
| This show is WONDERFUL!!! I just saw it today for the second time. I've loved Les Miserables for years, so I was very excited to see The Pirate Queen. It lived up to every expectation. I love that the lead female, who pours her heart and soul into every song, is strong and defiant, and clears her own path. Stephanie J Block and Hadley Fraser have an amazing chemistry, and voices you can get lost in. The singing is powerful. The dancing ... read more is incredible. Was I in France or Ireland? Review by: grandmother, Apr 17, 2007 |
My husband and I found ourselves in New York an extra evening because of the terrible weather on April 15th. We took the opportunity to catch the Pirate Queen which, according to some reviews, is wonderful.
I'm not a Broadway critic but I love musicals and have seen just about all there is right now in New York but we would have been better off skipping this production.
Can someone tell me how lazy can you get by literally lifting ... read more music from your other musical down the street? I just about fell out of my chair when I heard the music from Les Miserables. I mean really - but I guess if you own the rights yow own the rights but it was sure tacky.
There's a lot of potential in this production but according to my neighbor, the problems they had in Chicago were not fixed by New York. Don't waste your time or your money. |
