The Pirate Queen Reigns! Review by: mia, May 21, 2007 |
| Saw The Pirate Queen with a group of college friends and absolutely loved it! We loved the music, the costumes were simply stunning, and the dancing was spectacular, especially during the Christening scene! Hadley Frasier is the best kept secret on Broadway: his rendition of "I'll Be There" was show-stopping (and he's hot)! We were no the lonly ones who loved the show--the theater was packed and gave the cast a rousing standing ovation! |

AMAZING!!!! Review by: Laura, May 21, 2007 |
I went to see this show last Friday with my family. We got discount tickets and sat front row center. I will be honest, I had no idea of what this show was even about. When she show started I was in awe. I would have been satisfied if the show was done at intermission, it was that good. I called my brother and was raving about it during intermission. He asked if it was as good as Les Miz. I told him it was much better!! Act ... read more II started and again I was absolutely enthralled in the show. The acting and singing were outstanding. There are so many touching songs and many entertaining songs in this show. I have now seen over 20 professional shows *Mostly Broadway shows* and this one is by far my absolute favorite!! -Laura |

A sleeper!!!!! Review by: Disappinted patron, May 20, 2007 |
I loved Les Mis and was very disappointed with the Pirate Queen. I payed full price for these tickets!!! What was I thinking??? I fell asleep during the second act. The story was hard to follow and the music was nothing to write home about. There are so many good shows out there and I chose a dude!!! Unless you want a good rest, I would pass on this show. Review by: Sandy, May 18, 2007 |
| We were heading to NYC for the weekend and I checked BroadwayBox to see what shows were reviewed and came across "The Pirate Queen." Someone wrote in that it was just wonderful with beautiful drama, romance, gorgeous music and great dancing. We took a chance and bought tickets and honestly can say it was absolutely beyond our expectations! This show is powerful and stunning and worth seeing over and over again. Our family loved it!! Please go ... read more see it. This show is spectacular. |

Grace would be proud! Review by: KathyG, May 18, 2007 |
I loved it:) I was a huge fan of Grace O'Malley's remarkable life and although the play takes liberties with history, I think Grace would be proud of the overall performances and moving story. I loved the music and dancing and I will own the CD as soon as it's available! Teared up when Grace's legendary leadership led her clan to victory after the birth of one of her son's onboard ship- the scene includes breastfeeding- has to be a first in ... read more a Broadway musical- and so beautifully done, every mother will be inspired! |

Pirate Queen Sails Review by: Coach, May 14, 2007 |
Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Broadway musicals and I see almost everything that appears in NYC. After attending Saturday nights performance of the Pirate Queen I feel that this is one of the BEST shows I've seen this year.
I think that stephanie block is Tony award worthy and I felt that, hadley fraser and linda belnod played excellent supporting roles.
The music was nice and the dance choreography was amazing!... read more! The Irish dance was just enough to keep your attention and the scenery was second to none.
My only criticism is that it may have been a touch too long...taking 7-10 minutes off of each act was certainly something that could be done without negatively impacting the show.
I will see it again. Attend this show before Grey Gardens, Legally Blonde, Curtains and Spring Awakening...if you are looking for something new. |

Review by: Kathleen, May 11, 2007 |
| After mixed reviews, I didn't know what to expect. It dragged a little for me in the middle of the second act, and I thought the ending was a bit contrived (while historically based, the story takes a lot of liberty with historical fact). But overall, the show is well worth seeing. The production is fantastic, the dancing is great, and Stephanie J. Block deserves a Tony. Marcus Chait is so convincing, he gets some boos (and appears to expect ... read more them!) at the curtain call. It's a unique show, and I would go to see it again. |

I loved it! Review by: Fae, May 11, 2007 |
| I saw this twice in Chicago and will see it again in NY. I'm a little disappointed in the story, because it's not up to B&S standards and it has turned some people off of the show. The acting, singing, and dancing is EXCELLENT, though. Star Stephanie J. Block, romantic lead Hadley Fraser, rival Marcus Chait, and Queen Elizabeth Linda Balgord are NOT TO BE MISSED! |

Fast paced, exciting, lots of talent, will buy tickets for my friends! Review by: Pearly, May 8, 2007 |
| I was a little worried because some of the reviews are mixed, but I loved it and so did the other 5 people I was with. It's what Broadway is all about (and I'm an avid theater goer) the music, story, costumes, special effects, sheer entertainment. Full of drama, romance and excitement. Yes there is some Les Mis in it, and some Riverdance and even the flavor of Pirates along with some beautiful Irish history, music and story. That's ... read more what you want to see an exciting entertaining show. Not enough of them anymore. |

Long live the Queen Review by: FrankZ, May 7, 2007 |
| Saw the show this past Cinqo de Mayo. We were blown away. I cant figure out the critics negative reviews, but then again critics are just frustrated wanna be writers. The show was moving, thrilling, total eye candy. I will see it again and reccomend it highly to anyone seeking a bawdy, swashbuckling, musical love story. |

My First Walkout Review by: tpeace, May 7, 2007 |
Even though this was the best seat I'd ever had inside a Broadway theater -5th row, orchestra center - in the end, this was the first show I ever left during intermission. So please keep in mind that my comments are limited to the first half of the show.
The best element I found about this show was the set, although it was disappointing that the choreographer applied very little imagination in utilizing it in the blocking and dancing.... read more.
There were some pleasant Irish dance numbers, but the steps & choreography was pretty basic. The singing was acceptable. The blocking on the scenes involving swords play and fighting was completely lackluster. At times, the group scenes suffered from too much extraneous movement which tended to create distractions.
The first half of the show seemed to me to be longish. Given that the story line was utterly predictable, there just didn't seem to be any point in staying for more of the same.
Maybe the good stuff was saved for the second part of the show. For me, I just didn't want to invest any more time to find out.
The cast seemed to be giving respectable energy but the story line and choreography just weren't up to it. In the end, I'd have to say the deficiency here falls primarily on the choreographer.

a wonderful evening Review by: the colonel, May 6, 2007 |
my wife and I saw the show and we have no negatives to say.the story, sets, dancing and singing were excellent.
we have not seen such a "big" musical in years. the cast was large and sets complicated and exquisite. Our audience gave a standing ovation.the cast seemed to have a good time also.
i cannot understand the mediocre reviews

Comfortable seating... Review by: J. Longchamps, May 5, 2007 |
...Now that I've praised the high point of the show, let's discuss the not-so-enjoyable aspects of this production.
1. All sword play was done with plastic swords. 2. And the leading lady, our fearless "Pirate Queen," was afraid of those plastic swords coming anywhere near her. The lead actress was catatonic during all fight scenes. 3. The piped-in sounds of metalic swords "clashing" did not time well with the plastic sword ... read more play. 4. THE STEPDANCING WAS FAKED! Step dancing sounds were pre-recorded and piped in over the speaker system, while the performers (in soft-soled footwear) tried to keep up. 5. All on-stage actors carrying musical instruments, again,... mimed their performance. 6. The majority of the orchestration was handled by synthesizers and computers.
(Do you see a motif here?)
7. The glorious crowns of the Irish clans were, surprise, plastic.
The point is nothing is authentic in this performance, there is no talent displayed, and much of the performance is basically "phoned in."
And the "Cheesecake Factory"-eating audience members who lap up the show and call it "magnificent" don't realize that they have a right to expect more. An actor on Broadway should be expected to sing, dance, fight, and play an instrument.
8. The one moment where a "genuine" stage-effect is employed (the torches, at the end of act 1)- one cast member had a coughing fit, probably due to exposure from the prop not having been industrially fabricated.
9. 10. 11. The score is completely sung-through with not one discernable tune. And it is played at a volume that renders it difficult to understand the libretto. The reason they have to amp-up the sound is drown out audience members wrestling with potato chip bags. (The Hilton is one of THOSE theatres who encourage snacking during the performance, so long as you purchsed the snacks from them) It's no wonder that out-of-towners like this show. It reduces the theatre to the act of sitting at home on the couch, unecessarily snacking on junk foods, and allowing some sort of visual to wash over them.
The aspects that supposedly differentiate "Pirate Queen" from other musicals out there: the sword fights, the Irish dancing, the score, will not be performed live for you. So do not bother attending.
Worse than "Lestat" |
