Phantastic! Review by: rob o., Aug 1, 2009 |
This is a spectacular show. I had seen Phantom in Toronto in it's original 11 year run with Colm Wilkinson as the Phantom. Seeing it on Broadway was incredible. This is a show with phenomenal music, a great story, incredible production value etc. If you are A.D.D. with a limited attention span and little intelligence for only hip-hop and rock music, then go see Rock of Ages or Mamma Mia. If you can ... read more appreciate something truly different and phenomenal, then Phantom is for you. The story is brilliant. It touches you. The effects are wonderful. I love this show, I'm going to see it again on broadway in a month! Definitely worth every penny. This show has been on broadway longer than any other! There's a reason it still is popping up in countries around the world. Do not compare it the movie. The movie is absolute garbage. |

Wishing you [the original Phantom] were here again... Review by: broadway_baby, Jul 22, 2009 |
Having seen the show a few weeks ago with a friend, I still have mixed feelings. I saw the movie and liked it, and I have the original cast soundtrack , which I adore. I expected it to be spectacular, what with all the hype surrounding it. But I found it surprisingly dull, and unremarkable. The music is fabulous, but many things such as lyrics have been changed, which puzzles me. One would think that after all it's success, nothing would ... read more be changed. The cast was average, not stunning, and the chandelier was very sad and disappointing. The staff of the Majestic Theatre was absolutely despicable. They allowed and infant into the theater, which promply began wailing in the middle of "Think of Me", and failed to control the school group sitting in front of me, leading to harsh flashlight being shone in my face demanding to see my ticket in the middle of the dramatic "Angel of Music". Get the movie and get the soundtrack instead. Spend your money on something else. |

Must see this wonderful show!!! Review by: Gray, Jul 5, 2009 |
| I surprised my husband for his birthday with front row seats to the July 4 2:00 performance of The Phantom of the Opera. I thought the entire show was AMAZING. I have wanted to see it since I was a little girl and my husband had wanted to see it for quite a long time as well. It was worth every penny and I would see it again tomorrow if I could. The actors are amazing, they never miss a ... read more beat and the storyline keeps you intrigued for the entire show. What a wonderful 4th of July treat! |

Awful Review by: Steven, Jul 4, 2009 |
| I think that this is one of the three most over-rated Broadway shows ever (along with "Chorus Line" and "The Producers"). The fact that it's been running for 20 years does not mean it's a good show. The music was unmelodic and overblown, like all of Webber's music, and the show is pretty much a boring story wrapped up in pretty costumes and spectacle. Take that away and you have an empty shell. This show will run for another 20 years because ... read more it has become an institution, but it was very disappointing. Spend the same amount of money and instead see "Billy Elliot", which is vastly, VASTLY superior. |

Absolutely Amazing! Review by: Kayla, Jun 16, 2009 |
| I am 13 and I saw "The Phantom Of The Opera" when I went to Las Vegas over spring break with my family. At first I definately was having second opinions about it, but I went for my sisters sake. Let me tell you, I have no clue what the bad reviews are about. I absolutely loved it. A GREAT story line and it has you in tears one minute and scared the next. I dont know how it would be in New York, but the Venetian did an amazing job recreating such ... read more a classic. The effects, lights, and atmosphere seemed so real, and it felt like you were right there. The actor portrayol of the Phantom and Christine was amazing. The voices were pitch perfect, and they carried such a powerful emotion that everyone in the theatre could feel. I DEFINATELY would reccomend "Phantom" to everyone. |

Best show I've seen on Broadway Review by: , Jun 12, 2009 |
| Between the outstanding cast, the beautiful music, and the unbelievable technical aspect of this show, I was not at ALL disapointed. I've seen RENT and the Lion King on Broadway, as well as working in a theatre for 6 years, and I have always LOATHED opera. Still, I fell in love with this musical and bought the soundtrack immediately after I saw the show. We payed full price Orchestra seat tickets to see this show last minute, and we were NOT ... read more left disapointed! Nobody can go without seeing this work! |

Not my cup of tea, but enjoyable aspects... Review by: GiveMyRegards, May 14, 2009 |
| Just saw this show and I have to say it was a bit of a let down. Partly because it came recommended as a great classic show, which it is for most people, but mostly because of the operatic theme, which I realize is the idea of this story, just not something that excites me. I'm not saying I'm sorry I saw it. It had many enjoyable aspects and is a top notch b'way production in a beautiful theatre. I'm just glad that I didn't pay full price. I had ... read more discount tickets and sat in Row O (16th row). The set design is awesome, the costumes beautifully executed. The music is enjoyable, especially the classic phantom exerpt, cool! The operatic singing was appropriate to the theme, but the diva (older) soprano is quite shrill, which I also appreciate may be taken as comedic, since her young rival threatens to take her place, but since I was struggling w/ a sinus headache I found it hard to take. The overall acting was competant, especially Marni Raab as Christine, altho I found the Phantom a bit disappointing. Howard McGillin does a decent job as a somewhat awkward, freakish character, but I didn't find him compelling or very charismatic as a romantic lead. Overall, it's not a very upbeat show and a bit boring at times, especially the first third (I starting dozing, which I never do at any show). I do appreciate the dark side that this story unveils, but didn't find it that compelling (and I do like a good thriller and I'm not afraid of darkness in a plot if it's entriguing). I did have some sympathy for the Phantom as his plight was unveiled, and as Christine tries to show him the error of his ways, but it didn't quite hold my interest to any deep level. Also, I didn't quite get if the Phantom was supposed to be alive or a ghost, so the ending wasn't quite clear to me. Don't want to give anything away so I won't say more. Hope this review helps... |

Can't believe this is a classic Review by: Don't go, May 11, 2009 |
Went with large group. Everyone was bored, hated it. Songs overly long, screechy high note opera. Everything sung, no dialogue. I love and would recomend Les Miz, Wicked, even older classic musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, but definately not this! Boring, boring, boring!

Stunning, don't miss it. Review by: man on the moon, May 9, 2009 |
| Firstly, I don't like musicals and I don't like opera. However, this was the most brilliant spectacle I've seen on a stage. Great stage sets, fantastic orchestration and singing that sent shivers down my spine. Standing ovation at the end. Don't hesitate to see this. Fab. |

The Phantom will haunt you Review by: thteatremom, Apr 20, 2009 |
| I've finally seen the Phantom. It's moody, melodramatic, surreal, gothic, and has surprising bits of humor scattered throughout. The Majestic Theater is the perfect setting. We loved the chandelier and made sure to get a picture during intermission (watch out for crabby ushers at this one). For those with kids, he does murder two people (out of sight, but you see their bodies hanging) and there are sensual elements in the music and ... read more choreography. The music is the best part and is one reason I'd go see it again. The acting was superb, as were the vocals. The hardest part for me during spring break were the large school groups. Many of the teenagers did not seem to know how to conduct themselves in this type of setting. Otherwise, it was a pleasure. |
