Unfortunately, it's just mediocre! Review by: BNWW, Oct 5, 2011 |
| Mediocre. The story thrives on what has leaked out from the government/media about MLK. For some reason, Katori Hall felt a need to let it be known that MLK used the n-word as well. |

Two Great Actors, BUT One STEALS IT !!! Review by: Javy, Oct 4, 2011 |
I saw this play and I would tell everyone who is reading my Blog. It is a Good Play, Interesting in its Approach, but NOT a Great play. The stpry line is interesting and I dont want to tell to much not to give away. It Starts Out slow, and un even, but you can understand the message it gives to you. YOU May NOT agree with the Play Wrights overall theme, but it was Great for someone to tell it. The Production and Lighting was adequate, but ... read more the Two Leads Actors geel with time. I would say, Bring someone who will have a Detailed and Honest Dialogue after the show, and for Teens this would be great for them to see. |

Clarification on Lorraine Hotel/Motel Review by: Pat, Oct 2, 2011 |
| Just for your information, the creative team for The Mountaintop did extensive research for the set and lighting and it was indeed called "The Lorraine Hotel." The shooting took place on King's balcony of the motel addition of the Lorraine Hotel, where he stayed that night. If in doubt, simply look it up! Enjoy this fabulous show! |

Preview of the Moutaintop Review by: Adam, Sep 26, 2011 |
| I was able to purchase a SAME DAY ticket for $34.50 & had a GREAT orchestra seat valued at around $130! For a Wednesday matinee it was not extremely crowded. Surprisingly, there were a decent amount of scattered empty seats. . Being a young Caucasian 23 year old I did enjoy the play, but did not understand some of the references and terminology used. (I was also tired which of course had a significant impact on my judgement). I enjoyed ... read more to overall, especially the second half when things got a bit more interesting. It was great to see Mr. King as just another person with flaws like everyone else. The play did transport you back in time & Mr. Jackson & Ms. Bassett were great choices for the roles. Even though Mr. Jackson is amazing I did enjoy Ms. Bassett's performance a little more because of the role she placed. My mother is an elementary school teacher & wanted to know if it would be an age appropriate play to bring her students to and I would say no because there surprisingly is a decent (not a lot) of cursing (dropping the F Bomb) & sounds of thunder which might frighten a small child. Also, you should be aware of the backstory to the play because that is not exactly mentioned, but is referred to during the play. You will probably learn some facts about MLK that you did not already know & you will probably experience many emotions. Most of the adults who left the theater were teary eyed and wanted to take pictures outside to mark there visit. I also enjoy going to the stage doors after the performance to get autographs and speak with the cast. I had a few questions I wanted to ask Ms. Bassett & Mr. Jackson, but sadly didn't get the opportunity to. Maybe when I am in the city again this week I will luck out. I did however get to speak with (in my mind) the MOST important person from the play, THE DIRECTOR Mr. Kenny Leon who has an impressive resume of work & is such a down to earth person & great to speak with. If you have the time try & go! |

Huge disappointment Review by: willisam, Sep 26, 2011 |
We chose this play because we love Samuel L Jackson's and Angela Bassett's acting, and highly respect the life of Dr. King. What a huge disappointment. There was nothing about this show that was worth the money it cost to see it. As previous reviewer stated, we could not hear or understand much of the dialogue. We were in the 8th row. Poor enunciation and projection. The lighting was poor. Spots came on early or late. I felt ... read more like I was at a high school play. The story line was not compelling or entertaining. I could not develop any sympathy for either character. I cannot recommend anything about this show. We love Broadway shows and are rarely disappointed, but we sure were this time. |

Fifty-Percent of Actors Great in Two-Actor Show Review by: Carol, Sep 23, 2011 |
The Mountaintop is a fantasy play written by Katori Hall, who garnered an Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2010. This award must have been given because it was necessary to give it out to someone. The plot imagines an angel coming to Memphis to get Martin Luther King, Jr. on the evening of his assassination at the Lorraine Motel. Never mind that the set reads, Lorraine Hotel. This 100-minute play without intermission needs captions. I ... read more found it very frustrating that Samuel L. Jackson, a movie actor who could do innumerable retakes, was not directed by Kenny Leon to enunciate for a live audience. I missed half of what was said during much of the play, and I was sitting in the 7th row of the orchestra. The real reason to see the play is Angela Bassett. She transcends the vehicle as a stand-out actor. Of course her part is more well developed than Jackson's King, who vacillates among flirtation, arrogance, and mewling. When Camae, the angel, played by Bassett, comes to take King to heaven, the set changes as does the dialogue into a stream of events from 1968 to the present day. Next, we see Jackson looking down from heaven and seeing what has become of his dream. If you want to see a reenactment of King's life, get a copy of PBS's Eyes on the Prize. If you want to see Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson, see the play, but don't go for any enlightenment or inspiration. |
