Are you kidding me? Review by: red, Jan 12, 2012 |
This was a huge disappointment. The play moves slowly. I love Samuel L. Jackson as an actor, but in this role he disappoints. Angle Bassett, too often, seemed affected and animated. I missed a lot of the dialogue because of poor projection. I was seated in the row. I felt the story didn't do justice to the legacy of King. I get that the playwright wanted to convey the human side of King, but I don't buy ... read more what was presented (well I guess I did because the tickets were very exensive). Save your money and go see another Broadway play. |

Enjoyed this play tremendously. Took my mother and daughter so it was indeed a play for all generations. No it is not based on fact but an imaginative vision. Angela was outstanding and Samuel gave a great performance. Not my first choice to play MLK but a solid performance. Well worth the price of a broadway ticket. Kudos to Miss Hall.

It's Entertainment Review by: Chubby Theater Goer, Oct 27, 2011 |
| This is a reimagining of the events before the night of King's assassination so I'm not sure why people would expect a documentary. As a theater piece, this was very entertaining. I think if they made this more like a documentary with actual facts, noone will see it. People need to be entertained. It starts out slow but once you get into it, the dialogue is quick and fast and quite funny. I believe Bassett steals the show with ... read more an amazing monologue at the end. I just cannot imagine Halle Berry being able to do that as she was the original choice for the role. Cannot. Ultimately, a very empowering message to the Black community which is refreshing for a change. |

NOT Your Ordinary MLK Jr. Story Review by: Sapphire330, Oct 23, 2011 |
| Get your mind ready for this truly "out of the box" rendering of Dr. King's last night alive. Dr. King wrestles with the acceptance of his impending demise and is reminded of his shortcomings while being visited by a seductive death angel in disguise. You may like it or you may not, but rest assured - You'll be talking about it for days!!! Great acting! |

| For all the other reviews on this site that we critical of this show...how dare they. This show was EXCELLENT, FUNNY, HUMAN, INSPIRING, IMAGINATIVE, and a treat for Broadway. Both actors did a superb job and Basset deserves the TONY for sure. Go see it! |

This was no "mountaintop experience". Review by: Mary, Oct 19, 2011 |
I was disappointed in this play, especially because we splurged on the tickets, and there were other shows I wished I'd seen instead. The acting was excellent; Jackson and Basset were wonderful. Basset really brought life to her character, and made her likeable and funny. Jackson did a great job with MLK's conversational tone. With that said, I thought the play and characters could have been so much more richer and inspirational. ... read more I felt that the script of the play actually disrespected MLK, and I'm sure that if he and Mrs. King would have seen this today, they would be extremely disappointed, offended, and embarrassed. I know, I know....this is a fictional account, but couldn't it have been fictional AND respectful AND more representative of Dr. King, as well? Other reasons for my disappointment: - I lost count of how many times they used the F-word. And not just that, but M-F quite a few times. Really?....I mean, really. - I felt like the spirit of what MLK stood for and everything that motivated him was completely missed in this play (his faith in Jesus.) I didn't expect it to be religious, but I also didn't expect it to be irreligious and so extensively irreverant. Clearly, the writer had no understanding of the connection between his faith and his life's work for the civil rights of African Americans, because they got the whole faith thing completely wrong. You cannot separate what he did for civil rights and what made his heart beat. It was like the writer was trying so hard to "humanize" him that they went to the extreme. Examples: - He cussed like a sailor and seemed addicted to cigarettes and alcohol (maybe he was?, I don't know...) - His lust for another woman and making light of infidelity really put a bad taste in my mouth. - He chuckled over the woman's hatred of white people and thought it was funny that she said "F- the white man" and he said that that would be the title of his next sermon. I really wanted to like this play, but just left feeling deflated and disappointed. |

Excellent acting but understandably controversial storyline/depiction Review by: shida_girl, Oct 17, 2011 |
| I saw this play this past weekend. I can certainly understand the issue of the other reviews - if you are expecting a true-to-life story about MLK, look elsewhere. However, it is not advertised as that and if you take it for what it is, it is interesting. It was apparent that not everyone got that memo - the white couple in front of us left after about a half hour and the older african-american couple sitting next to me were clearly not ... read more pleased with the depiction of MLK as indicated by their frequent comments throughout. However, the acting, especially by Ms. Bassett is AMAZING! She IS Camae and you believe every word she says. The set design is pretty cool too - I am still trying to figure out how nothing fell off the bed at the end (you'll understand when you see it!) All in all, a chance to see great actors doing just that - acting. |

Disappointing. and I wouldn't recommend this plsy Review by: , Oct 16, 2011 |
Very disappointing! We are frequent theater goers and this is the first time I have felt a need to write a review. We celebrated a milestone wedding anniversary (forty years) and were given the tickets as a gift. My husband and I were expecting to truly have a "mountaintop" experience but the writer never took us off the ground. Since we were active in the Civil Rights movement and very knowledgeable of the life and legacy of ... read more this awesome man we expected much more from the play. This would have been an excellent opportunity to give those who were not born during Dr. King's time a better understanding of what it means to stand for truth and justice. I pray that we will all hold fast to the dream and never let it rest until the good is better and the better is best. Retired Educator. |

Disappointment! Review by: TSC, Oct 12, 2011 |
| Very disappointed in this production because it makes light of MLK Jr. and all he has done for this country. Everyone knows he's a human being and subject to imperfections as we all are. So why the writers of this felt a need to show his "humanity" is a mystery. Lynching is used in a careless way, the n-word is used carelessly, and you don't leave the theater wanting to learn more about MLK. Very disappointing show! |

Acting 10/Play 4 Review by: Arepo, Oct 10, 2011 |
I guess I wasn't expecting a fantasy. I thought I was actually going to be seeing a stomach-wrenching last hours of MLK's demise so I was disappointed. I admit to having a tough time with two-character shows but the acting in this one, especially Angela Bassett, was fabulous. I was also a bit disappointed to see vacant seats here and there. Somehow I thought this play would have attracted a larger following. Sadly, I was able to ... read more predict what the end was going to be like, with projected famous black icons flashing across a huge screen in order to stimulate excitement in the audience. I wanted so much to love this show but came out very disappointed as I felt it just rambled too much. I truly hope it gets fine reviews and that it is only me that "just didn't get it". |

Acting by Angela and Samuel L.- Superb! BUT!!! If you are planning to take your Christian church group- BEWARE! They Called GOD a M.F.; aside from referring to God as a "she". People walked out! I don't recommend it, if you call yourself a Christian. If the script had bashed homosexuals, they would speak out, right? Christians need to speak out too! Don't go! |

Was Ok For Me Review by: Kat, Oct 7, 2011 |
I saw the show, and it started out slow, but picked up. The story was interesting, not to give anything away, the writer did some interesting things. Was just ok for me. I was expecting allot more with this level talent. I think its great African American plays are finally making it to Broadway. I saw an Off-Broadway play last week called Black Angels Over Tuskegee. (About The Tuskegee Airmen) One of the best shows I have ever seen in my life.... read more. Rumor has it it will be making its Broadway debut next year. I cant' wait. I will support Mountaintop again when it opens. K. P. |

Review by: Jake, Oct 6, 2011 |
The Mountaitop play like most of African American plays on broadway are only to bring the African American community to broadway in an effort to make money. There is no real concern for the many lives that where lost during the civil rights movement. Many people gave there lives for justice and the right to vote in an evil society full of racism. The artistic quality of the play is poor, the writing by the playwrite left me confused as to what ... read more her purspose was. I left the theatre sad and angry that a play about Kings' last night on earth was entertaining lust for a woman, while his wif and children were at home wondering if he would return alive. The Mountian Top experieince is a spiritual awakening excperieince that transcends one. After his Mountain Top speech kning went back to his hotel and worked on his sermon for Sunday. Which state that, "America May Go To Hell." His dream became a nightmare, just as this play is a nightmre and does the civil rigts movement and many people who died no justice and tarnishes king's legacy.

A memorable play Review by: Legs, Oct 5, 2011 |
| Angela Basset and Samuel L. Jackson are wonderful in this very different, very creative play. In this fantasy, the characters are revealed; we see many sides of Dr. King and of the angel, Camae, too. At times, the play seems to stray and you wonder where it is heading, but it ultimately pays off in a powerful monologue delivered by the angel. The Mountaintop is unique and the performances are touching. |
