Most creative show on Broadway Review by: TheatreTeacher, Dec 27, 2008 |
| I always say that if you can only see one show in New York, see this one. The level of creativity is employed by julie Taymor and her team is amazingly high. And emotion is not sacrificed for spectacle. The songs in the 2nd act (Shadowland, Endless Night, he Lives In You) are very powerful and touching. Very impressive. |

Lion King Review by: Kris, Dec 26, 2008 |
| We saw Mary Poppins and The Lion King on a recent trip to NYC. Mary Poppins was absolutely fantastic. I would see it again and again. It is definitely recommended. The Lion King did not live up to the hype. The songs they added (that were not in the movie) were clearly added songs. They really stuck out because they were awful! I would not recommend spending your money on this show. |

Big disappointment with exceptional costumes Review by: First time in NY, Dec 17, 2008 |
| Very disappointed, the costumes were excellent and they were a real highlight with the animals walking through the audience. The rest of the play felt like I could have gone to the elementary school and watched the kids. I would have left after itermission like several couples around us but after paying that much for a ticket I wanted to get my monies worth. |

Still very good. Review by: Donna, Dec 7, 2008 |
I saw The Lion King on Broadway with the original cast in 1997. It was a moving experience and I was eager to take my new husband, who had never seen it. The current cast was very good, but not as good as the original. The hyenas mumbled through their lines, my husband had no clue what they were saying, I knew since I've seen the movie 1000 times. The orchestra sometimes drowned out the dialog. And some scenes had very bright, ... read more almost clownlike costumes that seemed out of place, that I don't remember seeing the first time I saw the play. The opening scene took my breath away in 1997, and while it was the high point of the show yesterday, it wasn't as good as I remembered. Are there fewer 'animals' processing into the theater now? Somehow it didn't seem as awesome as I remember. Also the Minskoff theater has about 2 feet of lighting equipment which obscured my view of the procession from my front row mezzanine seat, a problem I did not have in the same seats at the New Amsterdam theater. Something which was just as awesome as I remember was the performances of Danny Rutigliano & Tom Alan Robbins as Timon and Puumba, no disappointment there. If you haven't seen the play before, I do recommend that you go...because despite my few disappointments, it was still a great show. However if you have seen the show many years ago, if you saw the incredible Jason Raize as Adult Simba, if you welled up during the opening scene, if it was the most incredible show you've ever seen...enjoy your memories. |

Not So Much....Didn't Live Up To Expectations Review by: reviewer29, Sep 28, 2008 |
After seeing all of the other Disney shows on Broadway (Beauty & the Beast, Mary Poppins, Little Mermaid), I had really high expectations for this. The costumes and the scenery were incredible, as were the puppeteers, in true Disney fashion. With that said, I sadly admit apart from that, it was the least exciting Disney show I've seen on Broadway. It dragged at points, and I really was disappointed that the ... read more most popular songs (Hakuna Matata, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, The Lion Sleeps Tonight), were all cut short leaving me wanting more. Act One was too long and I wish they had brought in the older Simba sooner. Act Two was much better...the adult talent was great, more recognized songs, and it moved quicker. This is Disney so even at its worse it's still better than a lot that's out there. I would recommend it, but I would NOT recommend it at full price. Wait for mid-Fall promotions or look online to try to find discounts. As for being the best musical for the family, I do disagree. I think both Mary Poppins and the Little Mermaid blew this one away. I really think the "Festival of the Lion King" at the Walt Disney World Animal Kingdom did a better job than this Broadway version!

THE SHOW MADE MY NEW YORK TRIP WORTHWHILE Review by: Sarge, Aug 15, 2008 |
| My Husband and I went to New York for a couple of days and all I wanted was to see the show. It was sold out but we sat in the cancellation line for 3 hours and 15 mins. We got tickets about 15 mins before the show started the tickets were in the orchestra section. The show was magnificent, you can not put it into words, I love Mufasa, Scar and Rafiki and Nala. Those actors are wonderful, I'm speaking of Tshidi Mayne, Derek Smith,... read more, Kissy Simmons, and Nathaniel Stampley. I have seen this show twice and those performers does something to me. I gave them a 5 minute ovation, Derek Smith Tshidi Mayne are my favorites they play the characters so well. I will be back to see the play for the 3rd time next month, I recommend this musical, the costumes are out of this world, it just an amazing show. Thank you Ms Taymor and cast. 5 Stars goes out to you all. I cant wait to come back for the 3rd time. A MUST SEE FOR EVERYONE REGARDLESS OF AGE. |

Really, really, really BAD! Review by: drefinnej, Aug 15, 2008 |
| My husband and I went to the Lion King last night and I have to say this is the worst show I have ever seen. I think it's time for them to retire it off Broadway. We had front row center orchestra seats and I dont advise getting those seats at all. You can see too much from these seats such as the parts of the costumes that really shouldn't be seen. And several of the dancers really aren't that fit looking and it's just not a good thing to ... read more see up close since many of them are bare chested in this show. All that aside, the puppets were highly annoying and I just found them to be such a distraction. The acting was also quite poor. We left the show after the intermission. Very disappointing overall. The only positive thing was that the singing/music was very nice. |

First-rate show! Gave me goosebumps!! Review by: Lily, Aug 13, 2008 |
I took my daughter to see the Lion King at the Minskoff theater this past weekend for her Sweet 16 birthday. It was glorious!! We didn't even want to blink in fear of missing something. The actors were superb, the music was lovely (gave me goosebumps), the show itself and effects were superb. After the 5 minute standing ovation when people began leaving, my daughter and I looked at eachother wishing we could sit through another showing. I've ... read more seen my share of shows, but this one was beautifully done. Elegant and cute. Must see!! Lily~ |

Review by: Tink, Jul 21, 2008 |
Saw Lion King about 9 years ago, and then again this Sunday, July 20. Costuming still as amazing as ever, brilliant minds went into creating this play. I can say I remember the part of young Simba being a bit better my first time around. This time young Simba's voice was a bit weak, however he still did a very good job. Rafiki was GREAT! I had left orchestra seats, row D, first 4 seats off aisle, the third and fourth are somewhat ... read more obstructed. I sometimes wonder why these seats, even so close to stage, are sold at the same price as center orchestra. Does not seem right. All in all the experience was a good one. I am always in awe of voices and talent. I do recommend seeing this play at least once. I would highly suggest center orchestra or front mezzanine, if you can get first couple rows of center mezzanine. There are things that happen best seem straight on.
