| I howled through this play. Having seen The Pillowman (which I also loved), I knew what to expect from Martin McDonagh. Grusome, but funny. This is indeed grusome, especially the second act, where the blood really starts flowing. The trick to not walking out of this play (as several of the previous reviewers apparently did) is to accept the blood and gore as a vehical for humor, as McDonagh does masterfully. If you can see past that, you'll ... read more have a darned good laugh. The cast was outstanding (even the understudy for Podraic), although I thought Domhnall Gleeson' screechy voice was a little annoying at times. The story is interesting and the surprise ending was a beautiful thing. Not for the faint hearted, but well done and full of laughs. |

You'd find more wit in a 10 cent comic book. One stupid joke stretched and broken by a crew of cretins. First time I walked out of a B'way play after the first act in 30 years. No explaining the reviews, except to say they go out on a limb by agreeing that terrorism isn't nice. Seems as long as the "subject matter" is au courant, the execution doesn't count to today's reviewers. Bring back John Simon.

top `o the mornin, and evening as well Review by: phillytheaternut, Aug 1, 2006 |
| one of the greatest evenings in the theater in a very long time. eventhough the topic and effects are very current, it reminds of the old days on broadway when you went to see a play that was stimulating and new. we left the theater exhilarated with plenty to talk about over drinks afterwards. this production is for people who appreciate risk taking writing, not for disney fixated family tourist groups. |

oh no not another fountain of blood Review by: loismary, Jul 26, 2006 |
This play is without doubt the worst play I've ever seen. The violence was gratuitous, the script sloppy(the writer obviously had no idea how to end it) and the acting forced and strident. If the author thinks his writing is in the "angry young man" genre, someone should tell him that he needs to know what he's angry about. Otherwise, he's just another shock jock. Thank goodnes the irish coffee was good next door! |

Review by: fuzz, Jul 3, 2006 |
the smartest, most chilling and eye-opening theatre experience offered on broadway. most impressive and subversive use of onstage violence ever. smart playwrighting. the director's work with the actors had an amateur quality--he appeared more interested in using the actors to make a greater statement than about developping characters. the design covered for this well, especially the costumes. allison pill is especially unremarkable. |

Stupid and violent show Review by: dg, Jun 24, 2006 |

FORCEFULLY FUNNY ATTACK ON IRISH TERRORISM Review by: ralph, Jun 23, 2006 |
| An engrossing and painfully funny play, LIEUTENANT directs its humor against the most taboo of all subjects for the past 30 years ---- IRISH CATHOLIC TERRORISM. I can't think of one other play, movie, or news article (except one sketch on Saturday Night Live) that disapproves of the Irish practice of blowing innocent women and children into bits and pieces of charred flesh. Playing at the Lyric Theatre, right next door to Connally's Irish Pub, ... read more this forceful comedy comes at you with both barrels blasting. I was put off at first by the concept of a comedy about an Irish terrorist and his beloved cat --- thought it might be offensive. Good Grief - I'll give you Offensive: Try the recent Tony winner The History Boys --- supposedly about "the purpose of education." ROT! That one's real agenda is to justify child abuse by a homosexual teacher --- of the minor boys in his charge. Please skip the homosexual show and have a jolly good time with this, the funniest play in years. Hmmm! Well, as funny as Spamalot anyway! |

I'm already in the process to seeing it again. Review by: Bunny, Jun 13, 2006 |
| This is by far one of the best play out on Broadway today. I laughed from beginning to end. It's so funny, it's sinful. It had exceeded all of my expectations and more. I'm already thinking about seeing it again. Definitely worth it. |

Review by: Jolene, Jun 9, 2006 |
| Nothing new in this satire about the futility and violence of terrorism, this time in Ireland. It did give many guilt-ridden laughs because of the black humor, but I could have psent my money better. Jonathan Swift, who suggested eating the babies to assuage the over-population of the Catholic Irish back in the 1700's was the first such satire...this play is at the end of a long list. I will never forgt the name Wee Thomas!! |

Hysterical, thinking about seeing it again! Review by: , May 22, 2006 |
| From beginning to end we were in hysterics, the best show we've seen in decades. Don't get caught up in tales of the gore or people trying to justify it's contents, just go and have a good time. |

Scathingly Entertaining!! Review by: starshine, Apr 23, 2006 |
| Why does one spend money to see a play -- to be captivated by a story unfolding in front of you...to be charmed by the whimsical, taken in by the characters, and riveted by the playwright. It also doesn't hurt if the two hours one invests cause excruciating laughter! I can't wait to see this one again! |
