Pales compared to original Broadway production, yet some bright spots. Review by: rskblueyes, Apr 19, 2011 |
I was so looking forward to seeing this production as I loved the 1986 Broadway production. The casting sounded ideal. The first act was a bit dull and the pacing seemed to drag. However the play came to life in the 2nd act, both scenes were real funny. The preformances were a mixed bag. Ben Stiller was justok, but I must admit he character seemed to grow throughout the show. Jennifer Jason-Leigh was a bit one note. Only Edie Falco ... read more surpassed my expecatations with her performance, hers was a very realistic acting. In my opnion she was even better than Swoozie Kurtz. Im not sure why I was a bit disapointed with the overall show. It may have been that the original had unknowns at the time ( John Mahony, Christne Barnanski, and Ben Stiller). With the current stellar cast I guess I was expecting more. |

A well done (but not perfect) black comedy. Review by: NM_Murray, Apr 18, 2011 |
Saw the first preview performance. Many things to recommend the show, starting with a really stellar performance from Edie Falco. Ben Stiller was okay, and I think will grow into the role by opening. Most of the supporting cast was very good...I enjoyed Mary Beth Hurt and Alison Pill in particular. The set was very nice and held some cool surprises that you don't normally expect from a box set. Lighting was good and costumes served. The ... read more script won't be for everyone...the play is a VERY black comedy. Some moments of great hilarity, but other rather morbid moments as well. And Jennifer Jason Leigh, in a rather important role, is not very good. Particularly in Act I, where she has 70% of the lines, it feels like, she gets annoying because her performance is one-dimensional. This is not a "drop everything and see it" show...but if you're okay with black comedies that don't aspire to make you feel good...you should like it. If you want a play that is all neat and tidy...avoid. |

Dark, Depressing, and Disappointing! Review by: Rex, Bx, Apr 15, 2011 |
| This has to be one of the most boring and depressing productions I have ever seen. What a downer!! If you are looking to see a show that is light and happy, you won't find it here. Edie Falco's performance as a schizophrenic is commendable. Ben Stiller plays the cheating and selfish husband with some conviction, and Jennifer Jason Leigh plays his girlfriend as a cross between Jackie O and Karen Walker from Will and Grace. Her performance is good ... read more considering the material. The three nuns who are introduced in the second act add some comic relief to this dark and depressing production. If morose and macabre are what you like, then you may enjoy this performance. Otherwise save your money. |

Worse then a trip to the dentist.Avoid like the plague Review by: yankelover, Apr 13, 2011 |
| I have been going to theater for 30 years and this is by far the absolute worst play I have ever seen. The idea I guess was get some big stars together and tickets will sell no matter how boring and awful the story is.There was noot a laugh to be had and the audience booed during intermission,I cancelled root canal appointment cause someone had an extra tickets and I honestly think that would have been a less painful experience.Avoid at all costs.... read more. |

Not a special play Review by: Katerina, Apr 13, 2011 |
| We were very excited to see Ben Stiller and his debute on Broadway. The play turned out to be boring and nothing special. Ben Stiller was ok but very ordinary performance. We really enjoyed Edie Falco (Bananas) as she was just spectacular and funny. |

Review by: CJB, Apr 10, 2011 |
| The worst play i've ever seen. The story is pointless, depressing and boring. The dialogue is outdated and completely unfunny. Ben Stiller mailed in his performance, failing to bring any levity to the stage. The intermission was my favorite part. I savored every second of it. It was the most glorious relief of suffering I've ever experienced. |

Very disappointing Review by: Ly, Apr 8, 2011 |
| Such a disappointment. The play is just boring and the audience booed a few times, especially at the end of the first time, several people even left the theatre before the end and I was tempted to leave too. |

See It While You Can Still Get Tickets Review by: Max Keiser, Apr 5, 2011 |
| It was quite hard to believe that a show could be so cohesive from its very first performance. Naturally, Edie Falco (Bananas) was spectacular - but Ms. Leigh (Bunny) was also quite good. The show was entertaining, funny and also quite poignant. That is always a very difficult combination to pull off successfully. |
