Long in the tooth Heiress Review by: Diract66, Feb 7, 2013 |
| An enjoyable play that Judith Ivey steals from Jessica Chastain and David Strathairn. This is an old play that takes long to get into and you have to sick with it for two and a half hours. Jessica has one great scene in act two. The three star leads really need to project when not facing the audience. They seem to be playing down their roles at this point but they are still giving a worthwhile performnce. It will surely be sold out but see it ... read more if you can. The movie remake was Washington Square. |

Long but Enjoyable Review by: Hairybs, Jan 6, 2013 |
I saw this show last week and knew nothing of the storyline. It was thoroughly enjoyable. The acting was great and you got pulled into the story. If you like an old-fashioned broadway drama, you will love this show. Warning, the show is very long! I thing kids would be bored. |

Very good revival Review by: rskblueyes, Jan 1, 2013 |
I have seen the movie several times and saw the Cherry Jones production when in 1995. This current production was just as wonderfull. I was a bit skeptic of Jesica Chastin playing Catherine Sloper as we all know Jessica is a beauty and it would be a hard stretch to play her off as someone even her father feels is undesirable. I was proven wrong. What Jessica pulled off was she made Catherine socially awkward and inappropriate.... read more. You could sense Catherine's nervousness and you actually forgot about her looks. That is what I call acting!! The rest of the cast was wonderfull. and kudos to Judith Ivey!! I hope to see more of Ms. Chastin maybe in a Tennese Williams play ... |

Disappointing Review by: Sunshinegirl, Nov 20, 2012 |
| Ill conceived and miscast. The acting was weak and unconvincing. The pacing was slow and dull and things were oddly played for laughs that were not entirely funny. This is a must-mis and a great disappointment. Rent the William Wyler film or go back and read the Henry James source material, "Washington Square." You will enjoy those better. |

Really enjoyed it. Review by: EGR, Nov 3, 2012 |
| Got tickets because of the big name actors. Didn't know much about the story. But the story kept my attention throughout the play. My sister who has even seen the 1940s movie a few times gave it high marks. Judith Ivey was great. I would recommend. |

A Must See!! Review by: Stephie, Oct 30, 2012 |
| I eagerly anticipated this production and I was not disappointed. From the set to the actors to the updated story - everything was amazing. The audience was engaged and sat in silence during a few pivotal roles in the story. Jessica Chastain and Dan Stevens were both excellent and did a great job at selling their characters. Judith Ivey was hysterical as Aunt Penniman and David Straitharn was at times cruel but still had you believe he had ... read more Catherine's best interests at heart. I think it should be on everyone's must see list this season! |

Review by: joan, Oct 28, 2012 |
| I was engaged, but not impressed. I know this movie almost by heart, and it's hard to compete with that perfection so I modulated my expectations. I thought this production... blah? sturdy? like others have said, not special. It is played very broadly... anything to get the audience to giggle/laugh. And the laughs were OK for Aunt Penniman (Judith Ivey) but did not work for other parts. I thought the aunt and father strongest but Catherine and ... read more Morris disappoint... there is little fine or subtle in their performances. Maybe it's the big Broadway house problem, you have to play to the folks in the rafters. Thought the set was faulous. Glad I saw it but not a wonderful retelling and I really wanted it to be. |

Good looking, Well Acted Production of an OK Play Review by: upthehudson, Oct 22, 2012 |
| What we have here is a nice revival of an award winning period piece. Nothing more, nothing less. The top notch cast all turn in solid performances, the set design is magnificent and the pacing is always engaging enough. But considering how highly anticipated this production has been, it never quite feels special or terribly rewarding. Just a decent evening at the theatre. It's a drama of a young woman from an affluent household who ... read more is confronted with having to make a choice between her successful but unsupportive father and a young man with whom she finds herself falling in love. Perhaps it was my fault for expecting to see some subtle updating to make THE HEIRESS relevant and compelling. |

Room for improvement Review by: Janet, Oct 22, 2012 |
| My daughter and I were fortunate to obtain last minute preview tickets for the performance on Saturday evening 13th October. As a whole we enjoyed The Heiress. On this particular evening Judith Ivey was easily the star performer. She seemed most comfortable and was very believable in her role as Aunt Penniman. Jessica's physical acting of the shy and sheltered daughter was perfect but we felt a little let down by her vocal performance....... read more.tending on occasions towards the monotone. The set itself may have been realistic of the times but we thought it a little drab. |

Review by: Mitchell, Oct 15, 2012 |
| Wonderful show- not a minute of boredom- riveting from the very first second. Incredible acting and story- the full house standing ovation was very much deserved. I highly recommend this play to anyone seeking a really thought provoking theater experience- the time went by in a flash- not a moment wasted or One of my favorites- and I have seen LOT of shows. I yelled Bravo when the performers took their bows- something I do not normally do. |

A Penny Ante Heiress Review by: Morris Sloper, Oct 7, 2012 |
This is a poor Heiress. The women, especially Judith Ivey and Jessica Chastain are good. And, are far better than the men. Dan Stevens is in the wrong century and is more twinkie than adventurer. David Strathairn has terrible diction and doesn't always project. Moisés Kaufman is an adequate traffic manager, but he doesn't build tension on stage between the players. As for the front parlor of the Sloper home on Washington Square, ... read more where were are the beautiful object Morris Townsend admires? The doctor's "good taste." Ultimate, this play about love and passion is bloodless. With all the producers involved, it forces the question, who's calling the shots. The bigger question is why revive the play if you're not going to make it special. |
