Entertaining show - especially interesting if you love modern art Review by: stagestrucknyc, Feb 17, 2007 |
This is not the most momentous show of all times, but it certainly is entertaining, well-directed and well acted. The notion is that a pair of impoverished circus aerialists steal an etching (that bears their likeness) by the young Pablo Picasso and try to get a ransom for its return. They don't quite get the fact that it's an etching and there are 250 of them. The other characters in this little comedy are Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas,... read more, Guillaume Appolinaire, Pablo Picasso (and an alphabetic bevy of sexy girlfriends, all played by the same actress) and the art dealer Vollard. The action gives rise to some interesting discussion of what is the value of art, as well as many running gags (such as Picasso's successive girlfriends; the inspiration for Picasso's and Braque's collages coming from the thieves' ransom note, etc.) This is a slight play, but it is pleasing and entertaining. I am certainly glad I saw it. |
