Scathing Indictment by the Unlikeliest of Prosecutors! Review by: citizen, Feb 19, 2007 |
| I would not expect this play to be well received by too many among the usual theatre-going NYC bourgeoisie ...This play is about a solitary individual who experiences a Marxist epiphany, entirely in spite of himself and even against his will. Layer by layer, like a beautiful but poisonous lotus, his inner dialog with himself uncovers the thieving, murder, and banal cheating that culminate in the advantages we blandly take for granted. The play ... read more is brilliant for everything it is not: it is NOT moralizing political propaganda; it is NOT a celebration of dumb liberal piety. It is in fact a scathing moral indictment of exactly those two things. It is about a very clever individual who, once he has glimpsed into the truth of his existance, can not hide from it, in spite of his cleverness. The text of the play alone would make a very good read, but to see Wallace Shawn act it is an order of magnitude above a mere read-through: the keen intelligence and energy he gives to his character is not to be missed. Do not expect to be coddled or comforted. Do expect to have your value system provoked and challenged every minute with no escape (if you can take it). A must-see! |

Horrible Show; Was Sorry I saw it Review by: None, Jan 28, 2007 |
| This was a very boring play that put me to sleep. Wallace Shawn kept endlessly repeating the same things. There was no insight or even good humor. He should have cut the play to 30 minutes. Lots of white liberal guilt, but the character lacked real complexity |

Hugely disappointing Review by: Barpoint, Jan 28, 2007 |
Wallace Shawn is a witty, sensitive guy and a fine actor. Unfortunately, this play is little more than 90 minutes of repetitious rambling about liberal guilt and economic unfairness. There are a few good moments, but not enough.
