Wonderful performances, hilarious one-liners Review by: jim d, Sep 28, 2008 |
Anna Maxwell Martin and especially Sophie Thompson give the best comic performances I have seen in a long time. A lot of the lines cleverly parody the pomposity of an author who cares more for intellectual word-play than for the life-changing affects her books have on her readers, but the real treasure is in the delivery. This show also has a real 'emperor's new clothes' feel to it in that it looks at whether gender-politics has delivered ... read more all that is said it would, but it does so with light touch and is a fantastic night out. If the Broadway production is anywhere near as good as in London (I hear the protagonist will be played by someone other than Dame Eileen Atkins on Broadway) it will be night to remember.
