Basically Light Fare Review by: NedRacine, Feb 4, 2007 |
Drowsy is a solid pleasant evening of good theatre. "The Man in the Chair"(Bob Martin) is especially charming, and relates well to the audience. His love of theatre really comes through. Janet (Sutton Foster) and The Chaperone(Beth leavel) sing and dance beautifully. The other cast members are strong too. But, and this is a big but, the show is basically light fare. It's fun while you're watching, but quite forgetable once you leave the ... read more theatre. I usually buy a CD of the sound tract of most shows I see, but I skipped doing so this time. The only memory I will probably keep is that of Bob Martin's character's deep affection for Musicals. |

I loved every minute. Review by: crobbins, Jan 26, 2007 |
| I saw this show on January 9th. I can't say enough good things about it. I felt like it was written especially for me - it was entirely my sense of humor and that of my family, who I know will love it when they come to New York in March. Everything in the show is knockout, somewhere deep down I was aware that I was watching fantastic performances, great music, hilarious lyrics - but throughout I was transported into the mind of "man ... read more in the chair" and into the musical. It had me almost hysterically laughing at one point, to having a surprisingly large lump of emotion in my throat towards the end. Whether you sit at home listening to old records, or sing along with your favorite tunes - you will identify with this show and enjoy! I loved every minute and I will definitely go to see it again with my elderly parents. However, I felt very disappointed when the lights came up, because I know I will never be watching it for the first time again! Such an enjoyable, touching experience. And funnier than I can describe. |

Review by: Joni, Dec 26, 2006 |
| Saw it on Christmas at night and it was definitely the highlight of the season for me. I laughed my head off. The comedic timing was perfect. The singing and dancing was awesome. Who knew Jason Kravitz could sing and dance. Even my boyfried, who is not a huge Broadway fan, loved it. To anyone who saw it and didn't like it -- what planet were you on!!! |

I Want To See It Again Review by: derek in ottawa, Dec 1, 2006 |
I had read good things in the paper about this show, but mainly just that it was funny and there were Canadians involved. As it turns out, the paper was right on both counts.
I have read most of the reviews on this site and I agree with them -- the good ones and the bad ones. I loved the show and I laughed my head off. "Bride's Lament" had me choking, it was so completely absurd. Some scenes were stronger than others,... read more, but the comedic aspect was certainly the strongest part. Bob Martin was unbelievable.
As others have noted, I had trouble humming any of the tunes to myself when I left. I desperately wanted to sing, "Monkey, monkey, monkey..." but I couldn't find the tune. The music was not as fabulous as some, but it grows on you.
I wasn't even interested in buying the CD when I heard that it didn't have much of Bob Martin on it, but then I borrowed it from a friend. Now that I've heard it a few times, I love the music too. It's not the type of things to give you chills, that's all.
I think this musical was exactly what it aspired to be, "a musical within a comedy", and I really want to see it again. With most shows, the music really brings it back for you. With this show, you have to go back to the theatre to relive it. |

GREAT SHOW!!!! Review by: avkuehn, Nov 13, 2006 |
This is a very funny and cute musical! It has lots of funny songs that will have you laughing out loud and the actors are very talented. I thought that Bill Martin was hilarious! The plot was a bit corny, but still very enjoyable.

The Demise of Broadway... Can't we do better??? It appears theatre goers everywhere have been brainwashed! Review by: Theatre in CMI, Oct 10, 2006 |
| Wish I had read through a few more reviews before enlisiting to see this one... I love theatre... so what's to love about a show in which the premise is to force you into some simpleton's world as he relives for the hundredth time what would have been in any day called "the worst show on broadway". I think of Theatre as a medium to entertain, challenge and educate... The only success I saw in this show was it's ability to challenge... It ... read more challenged me to stay in my seat. The performers were full of talent, unfortunately their agents and handlers steered them in front of this train wreck of a musical. I always enjoy a show where I can walk away recounting the story and whistling a few tunes... It's only been 2 days and I can't hum a bar! |

Fast and funny! Review by: Jim, Sep 16, 2006 |
Just saw "Chaperone" last night from the mezzanine. Great fun! Bob Martin is fantastic; Sutton Foster continues to shine; Georgia Engel is a delight. The Kravits brothers channel the Marx brothers, Beth Leavel belts it out, and Danny "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?" Burstein is a rip.
Act II - you gotta see it.
Too funny!
