Boring with a CAPITAL B Review by: Bored from South Jersey, Jul 16, 2008 |
| Extremely boring and tired. I am a huge Morgan Freeman fan so seeing this play was a must. It turned out to be a huge let down and was probably the worst show I have seen. I saw more than 30 shows on broadway. If you are a Morgan Freeman fan, save your money and wait outside after the show is over. If you are lucky, he will give a wave and smile before he gets in his car. He didn't stop and didn't seem to care about the 2 dozen people waiting to ... read more meet him. |

Peter Gallagher is a winner ...but not a reason to see this play Review by: JB, May 29, 2008 |
| Peter Gallagher is the one and only reason to see this otherwise boring play. I went with high hopes because of Morgan Freeman but was left cold by the first act. The second act was better, but wish I had saved my money and saw another play. |

Improved greatly Review by: jjh, May 24, 2008 |
| Not just Morgan Freeman, Frances McDormand, and Peter Gallagher, but the entire cast was excellent. Peter Gallagher was spectacular, way beyond what one might expect. Saw it on May 24 Matinee. The experience of this cast, like that of Freeman's character, has benefited greatly from their experience in this play. |

Big Names Draw You In But Then Let You Down Some Review by: broadwaybound, May 5, 2008 |
We had purchased our tickets in advance for $70 from broadwaybox.com. Our seats were in the rear orchestra, row N, seats 9, 11, 13. The overhang from the mezzanine was above us as well as a fan for, I assume, the heat. We did have a bit of a hard time hearing the dialog from our seats, particularly when Morgan Freeman was speaking. This was disappointing to me since I felt I was exerting too much energy to hear what the actors were ... read more saying instead of being able to think about what was being said. The backdrop of the set was pretty impressive and the rest of the scenery, props and costumes did a good job reflecting the time period and storyline of the show. In our opinion, the second act was much better than the first. It was more passionate and interesting. Some of the story required a bit of a reach as far as believability. This was through the fault of the writing as well as the actors in my opinion. Of course, it was written in a time very different from our own, so that may have been part of the problem for me. Frances McDormand was always so poised and spoke so articulately, that it was difficult to think of her as a "Country Girl" although I enjoyed watching her on stage. Beforehand, I was most excited about seeing Morgan Freeman but he didn't quite live up to my expectations. As I stated he was sometimes hard to hear and although he did have some great scenes, he didn't have quite the presence on stage that I had hoped for. The other actors in the show did a really good job. I'm not sure why, but I really enjoyed the actor that played "the writer" and his character. I think the show is worth going to see if you are a fan of any of the actors and don't set your expectations too high although it wasn't one of my favorites.

Boring play + average performances = big letdown Review by: Elizabeth, Apr 27, 2008 |
| I agree with the negative reviews: average performances with the exception of Peter Gallagher who seemed to outshine the marquee actors. I too went just to see Morgan and Frances but they were letdowns. No chemistry between those 2. Frances flubbed her lines a few times. Other than the fact that it was neat seeing such high caliber actors so close, the whole thing was a huge (and expensive) letdown. Very dull story line as well- must be a ... read more lack of compelling plays on Broadway these days. Too bad- it was my first Broadway play (have seen 3 Broadway musicals)...maybe a musical next time. |

So/So Review by: Janine, Apr 26, 2008 |
| We saw the show and I guess the best thing we would say was that it was a thril to see actors that we know and respect so much. The show seemed long and boring but still, I have to say that I am happy I was there with my family and wesaw Morgan Freeman. |

A big letdown....!! Review by: sammy1, Apr 24, 2008 |
| Couldn't agree more with previous reviewers...was drawn to the play by the name actors and director and no one but Peter Gallagher lived up to expectations. Sitting first row in Mezzanine and missed at leat 50 % of Mr. Freeman's and Ms. McDormand's lines. And for you non-smokers, beware...there is much cigarette and cigar smoking going on onstage and it fills the air of the theater. Mr. Nichols needs to do a lot of work before opening. |

A VERY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!!! Review by: lg, Apr 21, 2008 |
| I saw the show the first night of previews. I paid a $100. for the "privilege" and would have liked to ask for a refund. I was especially let down by Francis McDormand. There was no chemistry or dramatic tension between her and either of the leading men... Morgan Freeman or Peter Gallagher. It felt like they were all sleep walking through the play. I'm a big fan of all of these actors, as well as Mike Nichols...and it was a HUGE disappointment. |

Great Start Review by: tferraro, Apr 19, 2008 |
I just saw "The Country Girl" and thought that it was better than the previous reviews posted here. It may be that previous reviewers watched the show too early. It is still not set to open for a couple of weeks and is still only shown as a "preview". Morgan Freeman is a tremendous actor. I found the the scenes to be a bit short and requiring set changes in the first act that were a bit distracting. In the first moments of the show, I ... read more thought the reviewers were going to prove to be correct, i.e. the line exchanges lacked freshness; however, they difinitely improved as the show continued. Morgan was fantastic, fresh and very much in character curtain to curtain. Frances mcDormand had some spectacular moments; however, many of her lines were a bit recited rather than acted. Peter Gallagher suffered some moments similar to Frances, however, his character was much more believable throughout. I bought him. The supporting cast offered some nuance acting that really tightened up the show, providing comic relief and dramatic impulse. Overall, I would recommend it. It will only get better. The cast is fun to watch and the moments where they nailed it showed wonderful glimspes of the greatness that will come as they continue to grow in their chemistry! |

Good actors Review by: , Apr 17, 2008 |
| Saw The Country Girl 4/16/08. What a treat to see Morgan Freeman, Frances McDormand and Peter Gallagher on stage. People need to know , in advance, that this is heavy drama. Some members of the audience laughed inappropriately. This is not light entertainment and for that reason probably won't be a smash hit. The performances were all very good and I'm glad I saw it. |

Surprise Disappointment Review by: Penny, Apr 12, 2008 |
| Saw Country Girl April 9. Was surprised that the actors didn't show any emotions or conviction with their lines. I expected a great show directed by Mike Nichols and starring Morgan Freeman and Frances McDormand and wonder whether no one yet has a handle on what to do to bring the play to life. It really put me to sleep; I just didn't care about any of the characters being portrayed. They were lifeless. My opinion, tho, since the ... read more audience gave the actors a standing ovation. But I did notice that a few people near me left during the intermission. The only good thing about the show was the beautiful singing voice that was prerecorded at, I believe, the end of the play. |

Review by: lin, Apr 10, 2008 |
| I saw a preview of the Country Girl, and it was a mess. Their was no chemistry between the actors and they were stumbling badly over lines and cues. I know this was a preview, but I have seen many shows in previews and this one was not ready for the paying public. The director Mike Nichols was in the audience that night, and he must have been upset! Peter Gallagher really put forth a valiant effort, but the other 2 leads seemed to be ... read more so disconnected from the action of the play. I can't imagine how they will get this one ready for opening nite. |
