THREE STANDING OVATIONS!!! Review by: H.B., Jul 19, 2007 |
| Fantasia MADE this show worth watching. I can't imagine anyone else playing the lead role in this. I can't describe how moved I was by this young lady's performance, as well as the entire cast. I have to admit I walked into this show not knowing what to expect. I've seen the movie and didn't see how it could be a Broadway play, but it flowed well on stage. It was pretty much true to the movie, but I haven't read the book so I can't comment ... read more on how it compares. Anyway, despite it being hard to hear the audio at certain points this was one of the best plays I've seen. I'm just glad this is a play that actually has a plot and characters you can care about. It's a play with heart and soul. I felt touched by the message and apparently so did the audience. A group of women behind me were crying by the end of the play and Fantasia (and cast) received three standing ovations at the end. I heard she's extending her run with the show - SO BUY YOUR TICKETS NOW!!! It's worth every penny. |

Fantasia was fantastic! Review by: LT, Jul 18, 2007 |
| I absolutely loved this show! The music/singing was fantastic and Fantasia was mind blowing! This is not a show for young children, but if you read the book and/or saw the movie, you already know this. It was a show that I would go and see again and again..... |

what an experience... Review by: , Jul 8, 2007 |
| AMAZING!! I took my mom for her 50th birthday, and we loved it! The Color Purple, made us laugh out loud, made us cry, but most of all made us leave feeling good. Fantasia was beyond words, her voice and the feeling she put into her character was more than an actress playing a part. I highly recommend this experience to all. (I must say, i don't think children would understand or grasp the meaning behind it.) |

Amazing, wonderful, completely moving--Fantasia packs a huge punch! Review by: TJ, Jul 7, 2007 |
| I went in with fairly low expectations but was blown away by this production. Fantasia is simply fantastic, amazing, gut-wrenching and so believable as Celie. I was completely moved by her performance. The Sophia and Harpo actors were outstanding and hysterical. Go see this show while Fantasia is in it. Her star is zooming into orbit and beyond! |

Surprisingly Entertaining Review by: Tav, May 18, 2007 |
| I must admit I only wanted to see The Color Purple because Oprah's name was attached and Fantasia was in it. HOWEVER this show was MAGNIFICENT. It went way beyond just Oprah and Fantasia. I absolutely LOVED IT. The entire cast was on point and portrayed their characters beautifully. The woman who plays Sofia should get some sort of award. She's awesome. Fantasia could work on her speech, some parts I couldn't quite understand ... read more what she was saying. But overall I give her and the entire production an A+. |

Must experience this wonderful musical Review by: Candy, Apr 30, 2007 |
| The Color Purple was an extraordinary experience. The story of Cele was well portrayed by Fantasia. I wondered if she would be able to carry the role AND SHE DID. The other members of the cast were excellent. My friend and I saw five musicals on the weekend and this was my favorite. The music, story, dancing, and theme all crescendo in the finale. Very powerful and moving. BRAVO. |

The Color Purple Starring Fantasia Review by: bishoprso, Apr 24, 2007 |
| I have seen The Color Purple on Broadway 4 times, once with LaChance as the star and the last three times with Fantasia. It was wonderful the first time and fantastic the last three times. I was suprised at how powerful Fantasia was as Celie in the acting arena and of course the vocal element was incredible. The cast as a whole seemed better and connected together in a much more tangible way. The new Sophia, the new Sqeak and the new ... read more Mister were perfect choices. The Humor was wonderful and the play seemed much more moving. My advice if you have not seen it, is to quickly go and see it. If you have not seen it with Fantasia, don't be fooled by the press, quickly go see it and expect the surprise of your life as you forget that she is a singer and find out that she knows the pain and strength of the character Celie. |

LOVE IT! Review by: Ezequiel, Apr 23, 2007 |
| I love this musical! I've seen it 3 times already and CANNOT get enough. It's different than anything else on Broadway right now. It has an eclectic mix of music, ranging from R&B, Pop and Gospel. It is a really great story and fun theater experience. |

A true theatrical experience Review by: Owen, Mar 20, 2007 |
| A gorgeous movie that has now been more than matched by a ravishing stage musical. Every cent required in mounting this show can be seen on that stage. Costumes that looked as if they had been especially made for the performance I attended on 3/11/07 and an entire cast who simply were sublime. Coming from the UK standing ovations are rare in the West End - sure some shows do get them but rarely have I seen a finale where the entire audience were ... read more on their feet as the lights went back up for the chorus to take their bows. This show touches both your heart and soul and when I hopefully return to NY next spring I hope that it is still running as it truly is a wonderful joyous, uplifting and incredibly entertaining musical. |

Criticisms stand... but it's a great show anyway! Review by: Otter, Mar 18, 2007 |
I agree with some of the criticisms that the many years and complex story are moved through too quickly in this show. It results in shortcuts in plot, character development and even musical pieces that do not fully develop and falls a bit short of giving full voice and power to Walker's Pulitzer-Prize winning novel.
HOWEVER, even with that, this is a stunning piece of musical theater. The score is clever, with the Greek-chorus ... read more of church-ladies moving the story along. The performances are very strong. The protective and transformative power of women's loving relationships with each other is celebrated in a way that I have never seen on a Broadway stage... and is long overdue! The dream-like staging of the letters from Celie's sister Nettie in Africa was elegant.
I definitely recommend seeing this show... it is uplifting and beautiful. Because the story is rushed through, I believe it helps if you are familiar with the story going into it. |

Most Amazing and Inspiring Broadway Show - You Must Experience The Color Purple !! Review by: wallis104, Mar 4, 2007 |
Oh My Gosh !!! Seeing The Color Purple was absolutely the most amazing and inspiring experience. I first saw it with a girlfriend in January... was so moved that I again purchased tickets and 3 weeks later my husband, myself and another couple drove from Baltimore to New York for the day, just to see The Color Purple.
Jeanette Bayerdelle had the role of Celie... She exceeded any performance I've ever seen on ... read more Broadway.
The music leaves you breathless - the singing is beyond magnificent! One of the most memorable experiences.... thank goodness we have the CD to play over and over again.
I've already purchased tickets for July, 2007 to take daughter and granddaughter....
EXPERIENCE THE COLOR PURPLE !!! |

Simply Dreadful Review by: FrankB, Feb 20, 2007 |
This was a great disappointment, and my expectations were not too high to begin with. This production had no heart or soul. No memorable music, or performances. Imagine too much scenery? Every scene had new scenery that looked like it was from the Thomas Kinkade Collection. This show belongs on a cruise ship or theme park. not Broadway. Simply dreadful. |

Some rated this as a mediocre musical/play, they obviously are clueless. Review by: Jefff, Jan 8, 2007 |
I have seen this musical/play twice, and you would have to be an clueless as not to enjoy this production. I compare this to Wicked as one of the best on Broadway. I have seen almost everything that is currently on the strip and this is by far the best. The first time I saw this play I had very low expectations, and was BLOWN away by the singing, acting and energy this show has. From some of the reviews that people gave ... read more this production, they must be one of those annoying people on their cell phones during the show to understand this powerful and well done musical/play to appreciate it.

Entertaining though flawed Review by: JW, Jan 7, 2007 |
Overall, although flawed, I found this show to be very entertaining and uplifting. The unique musical score(blues-jazz-gospel) effectively conveyed the emotional sweep of the story. The performances were first-rate, with the lead, Jeanette Bayardelle, in particular, shining in an extremely difficult role.
On the negative side, the show's flow could have been improved had it not rushed the plot during the second act (it seemed like ... read more 20 years of the story elapsed during a 20-minute span). In addition, the musical number opening the second act seemed to bring the show to a halt; that number could have been shortened considerably.
Because of the mature subject matter, this show is not recommended for young children. |
