A terrible rendition of a beautiful novel Review by: GothProf, Oct 29, 2007 |
| This is a great production of a terrible musical. The writing team took a highly emotional book- charged with heart wrenching events, and made the tale bland and emotionless. No soaring songs for Celie?!!! Ummmm HELLO! She's the FOCUS and the composers had NO idea how to write psychological development for a character who discovers amazing strength and forgiveness... her music should soar- instead- they ignored her- It was painful to watch all ... read more the missed opportunities. The cast is amazing(!), but the song writers do not belong in the theater; they belong writing current pop-songs for TV shows. At one point, a group of men cross the stage with a dead deer hanging from a branch- The PERFECT metaphor for Alice Walker's book. A sacrificial tale supported by strong men and women- yet it's deader than a carcass and can not be revived no matter how stong the production is. Alice Walker- your words are beautiful- What have they done to your book?!!!! (...and i saw Carrie the Musical too!) |

saw it with LaChanze ,again with Fantasia Review by: Canadian Broadway buff, Oct 25, 2007 |
I did not see the movie with Oprah, Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover prior to seeing it on Broadway. I found it moving and the music is excellent. This, along with Wicked are my two favourite musicals(even over Chicago and the Producers with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick). I thought it should have deserved more Tonys but at least LaChanze got one. Once I found out Fantasia took over the role of Celie, I had to see it with her. ... read more Fantasia was FANTASTIC!!! I thought she did it better than LaChanze who won the Tony. It was so moving that Fantasia and the whole cast had the entire audience on their feet swaying and clapping doing the reprise as if we were at a Baptist church |

A great theatrical experience! Fantasia and cast are superb! Review by: Broadway fan, Sep 27, 2007 |
| Fantasia is superb in the role of Celie. Her passion for the art shines through in this very emotionally driven role. She is believable and her portrayal, not to mention her singing, tugs at the heart. There is something to be said for a performer who can connect with an audience every time she sings a note. A 'must-see' before she leaves the role in January. The cast is amazing as well and the singing is beyond belief. The opening number ... read more will blow you away. Excellent talent, but then again, this is Broadway afterall! |

A Must See! Fantasia is superb! Prepared to be moved! Don't forget the tissues! Review by: Vanessa, Sep 7, 2007 |
| I saw the show when it opened and was so disappointed. I loved the movie but with all the wonderful singing and great comedic moments the show lacked heart. I fought hard when a friend tried to drag me back after hearing all of the great buzz about Fantasia. I AM SO GLAD I WENT BECAUSE FANTASIA TOTALLY CHANGED THE SHOW AND BLEW ME AWAY WITH HER EARTH SHATTERING PERFORMANCE!! Fantasia is absolutely fantastic in the role of Celie and brought ... read more me to tears throughout the show. I can't remember the last time I was so moved by a performer. The comedy seems all the more appropriate and funny now with Fantasia's very real, very authentic portrayal of a woman who has survived great trauma but manages to find an inner strength and voice. The actors who played Sofia and Harpo were also incredible. Go see this show before January (when Fantasia is scheduled to leave) and make sure to bring the tissues. |

WOW! See this show! Review by: MusicTheaterDiva, Aug 27, 2007 |
| I've seen many, many broadway shows in my time and this one will always stand out to me. I have never been so emotionally involved in a show or cried so hard with both joy and sorrow for the characters. It's such a dramatic plot, but the trio used for most of the comic relief was fantastic, as was... well, everyone! Fantasia was not on the day we went to see her, but we (the audience) sure didn't care by the end of the show. Our Celie, ... read more Montego, was absolutely amazing. The acting, the singing, the 'tude. It was all breathtaking. I have never heard an audience react like this. We were sobbing, shouting, clapping, leaping to our feet when it ended. It was an amazing experience. I recommend this show to anyone. Go see it! It will blow you away. |

Loved it! Review by: ladyscorp, Aug 16, 2007 |
Outstanding show, plot was true to the book. Fantasia (who is fantastic) got sick last night and couldn't come out for the 2nd act, but her understudy held it down. Dancing was so much fun, singing was also great! All actors were outshanding, music, scenery - the best. I was dissappointed aobut 2 things about the show: one was that the church scene where Shug reconciles with her father (in the movie) was cut, and the other was that I love ... read more musicals with a "grand finale." I expected a fun exahausing yet uplifting final song and dance number leading into curtain calls - didn't happen. Front mezzanine may be preferable to lower orchestra seats if you're not tall because of the slope (or lack of it in the front orchestra section.) |

Couldn't sleep after seeing this play! Review by: DeReefe, Aug 9, 2007 |
| I just went yesterday (8/8/07) to my first Broadway play and I was absolutely blown away! The play was so good I couldn't sleep! Fantasia was so awesome that she sounded like Angels were in her voice. I cried and cheered so much, I was hoarse. I would go see it again without a doubt. I highly recommend that people of all races go see this play, it WILL blown your mind... |

BEST EVER!! Review by: CJ, Jul 25, 2007 |
| I went to see The Color Purple on July 19. This was my first broadway play in New York. I must say this play was better than I could have ever imagine. The movie has been my favorite since I first watched it as a child. I can't even count how many times I've watched the movie. Therefore I couldn't wait to see the musical. I was not let down. Go and see it you will not regret it!! |

Blown away Review by: barbene, Jul 24, 2007 |
I saw this show a year ago and quite enjoyed it. When I heard Fantasia was taking the role of Celie, I knew that I HAD to see it, even if it wasn't a show that I would normally have gone to see a second time.
Boy ! Am I glad I did. There are moments in your life when you know that you have experienced something special. Fantasia's performance left me emotionally drained. I was beside myself at the end. What a ... read more magnificient actress and how lucky we are that the world found Fantasia.
I could and throw every accolade at this remarkable young woman who has breathed a whole new diension into the show.
You still have about six months left to see Fantasia. It is hard to imagine anyone being able to fill her shoes after she leaves, and as such I can only recommend from the bottom of my soul that you go and see Fantasia perform in The Color Purple.

| I've seen the show twice and intend to see it a third time with my aunt. The performance is lively. The singing and dancing very entertaining. The story line was familiar from the movie but not as sad. Go and support this wonderful cast one and all. |

| I went to see TCP on July 22. I have waited for a while to see Fantasia in her role as Celie was so excited to go to New York and see the play. Much to my disappointment Fantasia did not perform that day and I was hearbroken but I still saw a wonderful show, The woman that replaced her was very very good and convinced me in the role of Celie. If I get another chance i may go see it again hopefully with Fantasia but I still was impressed with the ... read more overall show!! |
