| This was my first major broadway show so I wasn't clear on what to expect. All I expected was just a genuine show of quality actors and actresses. From the first scene until the last scene I was amazed! I said, "This is really good throughout the whole show!" The scenery and props brought the movie to life for me. The performers were authentic and committed to their roles like nothing I have seen from Hollywood! I was ... read more thoroughly impressed and moved emotionally from several scenes. I want to see the movie (oops play) again! It was an outstanding show of talent on every level! |

Couldn't believe my eyes Review by: mel, Aug 31, 2010 |
| I went to see the Color Purple with some friends. Costumes, scenery & props all were ok. I will not go see this play again or recommend anyone to go. Too much was focused on the Celie & Shug relationship, which made me want to leave. Totally disappointed. |

Why all the hype? Review by: levinbar, Jul 30, 2009 |
| The Color Purple was a great movie but I was extremely disappointed in the musical. I had a difficult time understanding what was being said, both lyrics and dialogue. the music was less than memorable and the story disjointed. Overall, a big letdown. |

Messy adaptation Review by: suzy, Sep 6, 2008 |
The marvellous voices and superior costumes didn't fix that the show was a messy mishmosh of the book...the songs were entertaining and made the audience move in their seats, but not one song really stuck in my head. The "greek chorus" style group of gossipy women who acted as narrators was just bizarre. Read the book, see the movie, but only go to the play if you want to hear the voices and see the costumes. |

Color Purple was pretty good! Review by: Ms. Lo, Aug 20, 2008 |
| The color purple was a good play. The actors were good. I saw it in Atlanta and there were no well known people in the play. I must admit Ms. Sophia was very funny and I enjoyed her and Harpo's performance the most. What I didn't like was how Ceelie and Shug's relationship lasted throughout the movie. Everytime they kissed it made be cringe. It was way too much and over the top. I also was hoping that Shug song the famous song "Speak ... read more Lord - God is trying to tell you something" at the end, which she didn't. |

"Amen" for the Color Purple !!! Review by: Greg, Apr 26, 2008 |
It was a beautiful musical adaptation of a great story of hope. Some critics say it was too much story thrown out of a speeding car window...blah..blah...blah. I loved it. I've seen a lot of musicals and "bar none"... this was the best . Powerful singers with well written melodies to a great story. I clapped , stomped my feet , cried and shouted "Amen".

Color Purple...not so much Review by: TheatrePro, Jan 27, 2008 |
Really??? Y'all thought it was good??? Wow. Color Purple is my favorite book and my favorite movie, and I really really wanted to like it. There are many talented people in the cast - don't get me wrong; but the show is a bit of a mess, convoluted, undistinctive music. I saw it with Fantasia, and I really wish that I would have waited a week to see her replacement. ...and the audience...ooooh, they were LOUD. |

Poignant, Important, Memorable Review by: , Jan 24, 2008 |
Oh my god..I couldn't get to a computer sooner....I cannot say enough about this show..I wanted to sit through it again..I saw the show on January 20..I don't think anyone known was in it.. The show was professionalism to its T. The voices great..the scenary beautiful..I enjoyed it more than the movie.. I really loved the songs Shug sang to so Selie.. I don't think a man would really enjoy it but the message to men was so valid.... read more. The large message to me was acceptance. This was one of the best plays I have ever seen in my life..yes it is pretty long.. I am 58. |

Hoping Fantasia comes back Review by: Rick, Jan 22, 2008 |
| My first attempt to see the show was unfortunately interrupted during the strike, but as soon as I heard it was over, I booked tickets to head to see it. Out of everything I have seen (and it's been a lot of shows) this is one of the top 3, if not the #1 performance I have seen. Fantasia was incredible. Words cannot describe the emotion she put behind the character....becoming Celie. Everyone in the cast was great - Elizabeth was ... read more phenominal as Shug. Loved it and hope Fantasia comes back! |

Must See! Review by: mattb703, Jan 10, 2008 |
I spent an amazing afternoon at the theatre yesterday when I saw The Color Purple. This show is truly amazing. First, the acting and singing was spectacular. From the moment the show opened through the curtain I was blown away by the voices of these professional people. I was particularly impressed with Zonya's performance. Her portrayal of an abused woman in her circumstances was so convincing. I was also a fan of LaKisha Jones from ... read more American Idol. Second, the directing was done really well. They used the space to tell a moving story. All in all, this is an amazing show that moved a 22 year old white boy...Thank You |

Fantasia will knock your socks off!!! Review by: Guapa, Dec 26, 2007 |
| Just saw the show last wknd and I would pay $1000 for a seat to see Fantasia perform again. If you are in New York, you MUST see this show and get orchestra seats. It will leave you speechless. Fantasia deserves many awards for her remarkable performance. Simply the best!!!! |

| Great musical with very good music. I did not see this with fantasia, but the understudy touched my heart nonetheless. Good songs and also very thought provoking. It made me feel like I was part of the musical, and in the end it was very sweet and touching. |

No Fantasia... What a disappointment!!! Review by: Watt, Nov 6, 2007 |
| Plan this trip 3 months in advance, and the unthinkable happened... NO FANTASIA!!! I didn't even care to see the play the other two times in NYC, so once Fantasia was added, I had to go. So I and many others entered the theatre and again NO FANTASIA..we were all so upset. The replacement, Montego Glover was okay, I wasn't moved, but she wasn't horrible. My thoughts of the play were so-so; actually somewhat below average. It felt rushed,... read more, there were either too many acts/scenes or maybe it was too choppy. So, now after reading all the other reviews, it sounds like Fantasia really made the play. So HATS OFF FANTASIA....Keep up the good work. So for all the attendees, just keep your fingers cross while standing in line the night of the play, maybe the STAR will be there to truly express in song the true meaning of the "COLOR" purple. |
