Good Cast Good Dancing but the Book is Awful Review by: guest, May 1, 2012 |
| a shame to see such a talented cast lost in a story that defines cliche. Music is pretty much all copies of songs that were better as the originals. Book is just a complete mess. Dancing is good and sexy and the band sounds great. Singing is on the whole pretty good. If you just want to hear good singing of clone blues songs and see some good dance then it's OK but if you're looking for a musical don't bother. |

| The singing was great. The dancing spectacular, especially one slinky duet in the second act. The performers were good, but disconcertingly all essentially the same age. The book was a weak cliche of every movie about jazz set in the 1930's. The woman sitting behind us remarked as the curtain went down " I need a whiskey, and a gun to shoot them all" |

Fun and Professional Review by: aseatontheaisle, Apr 24, 2012 |
| The City Club has everything that one might expect to find in the entire genre of 1940s film noir all rolled into one flashy, splashy production presented as “an original blues and jazz musical about the indisputable intoxication of music” - an original blues and jazz score; elaborate choreography; long legged sexy chorus girls; extortion; murder; political and police corruption; booze; drugs; gambling; racial discrimination; love; betrayal; ... read more economic and class distinctions; inter-generational conflict; the disclosure of family secrets; incestuous relationships. And for the most part, it does work. That is, it does provide two hours of sustained entertainment for those whose goal is just that – simply to be entertained – rather than those seeking something more in the way of a more inspiring, enlightening or original theatrical experience. But I don’t think that you’ll find yourself humming any of its tunes as you leave the theatre and while the choreography is ambitious, I doubt if you will find it memorable either. And ultimately, the play devolves into a predictable morality tale between the forces of good and evil. On the other hand, the entire cast – singers, dancers and actors alike but especially Kenny Brawner – all deserve credit for truly professional performances. |
